QOTD: Have you had a book catastrophe happen? If so, what happened?? My copy of A Personal Matter suffered from the worst accidental ketchup explosion this past spring! 🙈 It was in my (real leather and canvas) backpack purse along with a book I borrowed from a friend. I had no idea that I had several Whataburger ketchup containers in my bag, and when I opened it up to get something before running across campus for a class, I discovered a terrible ketchup mess! 😱😭 LUCKILY (not sponsored, I swear😂) @whataburger has the best ketchup which also turns out to not be super runny, and I managed to get nearly all of the ketchup out of everything -- even the book pages -- really easily later that night when I managed to find time to clean it all up. i rly loved the very strong sense we viewers got of..... how the ‘world order’ changed when the yogoese came to power, that you see in the modifications and strategic silencing of yaku stories and traditions. the public face of the new yogo empire for propaganda, and the secrets beneath that. it’s symbolic in every possible way that the suppressed lore of the yaku manifests physically in a child of the royal family of the yogoese, and ofc its even neater symbolically that a male heir hosts the spirit egg

there’s a kind of....anthropological, scholarl y sensibility?? woven deeply into this narrative. it’s seen in the main plot, like i said. it’s also seen in shuga’s genuine love of knowledge and willingness to learn from non-standard, feared or discredited sources. but also in the end when shuga works with torogai to find the last piece of the puzzle-- ironicall y made possible bc the yogoese kept written records, while the yaku who relied on orature lost some knowledge bc of the interference of the invading people. but these two working together is also symbolic, altho im not sure of what bc the obvious answer is very HMM in its own wa y.... more on this later

but ALSO, tanda remembering that the summer festival ceremonial dance encodes the older lore of rarunga fearing fire!

so i was just watching and being like, hey this is rly cool, this is kinda my jam, just bc of this sensibilit y

and then i finally look up uehashi nahoko, author of the original books and wiki says Uehashi is also Professor of Ethnology at Kawamura Gakuen Women's University

well then :D

i never saw the anime and i just finished the first season of the LA buuut im also eager to read the books now. problem, only the first two out of 12 (!) are translated into english so far?? idk why no one’s working on the next ones yet, maybe someone is, international translation is a complicated business.
