Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

5/5 | Quiet, devastating, and brilliant.

The story of an Artificial Friend chosen by a sick girl. Klara’s voice—so logical, so innocent—makes you see humans in a totally new light. It asks huge questions about love and soul without ever being preachy.

Not a single page feels wasted. The ending left me staring at the wall for a good ten minutes. Ishiguro does it again.

A Review of Cafuné by Abe Akiko

Cafuné is an exquisite, quiet gem of a novel that captures the delicate and often unspoken intimacy of a long-term relationship. Abe Akiko's prose (beautifully translated by Mika Aono) is like a series of carefully observed watercolor sketches—subtle, precise, and deeply evocative.

This simple act becomes a portal, through which flow memories, small grievances, private jokes, and moments of profound tenderness that define their shared life. Abe masterfully explores the weight of ordinary things: a shared silence, a familiar gesture, the shape of a missing tooth. The Portuguese word "cafuné" (meaning the tender act of running fingers through someone's hair) is the perfect title, as the entire novel is a literary enactment of that gesture—a gentle, loving attention to the minute details of another person.

This is not a novel of grand drama, but of profound interiority. It’s for anyone who has ever wondered about the silent languages built between two people over time, and the quiet love that resides in the space between words. A short, stunning, and remarkably moving read.
