The first time they meet, his lower lips was bruised and his left eye was strangely swollen and Hanna was standing at the reception like the good little worker she was and eyeing the male with an expression that would have screamed appalled at anyone who bothered to look at the uneven pair but in actuality, she didn’t care as much as she made it seem. This was her job, and she was supposed to look appalled when someone like him stumbled into the hotel’s lobby at precisely eleven minutes past midnight, before demanding a room for the night.
❝Don’t you want to see a doctor first?❞ The response apparently didn’t seem to satisfy him, and Hanna wasn’t about to dig any deeper so she simply continued to keep her gaze fixated on the male’s face, taking in all the small details just in case she needed to remember him. The brunette didn’t know why, but there was a feeling in the pit of her stomach that maybe, just maybe he meant more trouble than what his outer appearance already suggested. ❝A room for one night and only one person?❞
She knew that there were enough spare rooms left, given that it was Christmas and most people preferred to stay at home throughout the holiday season but he didn’t know that and she wasn’t about to let him know either until he handed her the money without saying anything, and she couldn’t quite help the surprised expression that settled on her features. The male looked badly damaged, and yet he refused any sort of help. Hanna couldn’t help but wonder whether he was running away from something. Or someone.
But it wasn’t her business to question such things. Five minutes later, he was on his way to his room with the key she had handed him, and Hanna was left wondering whether the name he had given her was his real one, or if she was going to regret this.
Jung Haneul.
The next time they meet, she stood in front of the large Christmas tree at the marketplace with clouds forming in front of her mouth whenever she let out a sigh, her hands tightly clutching to her phone. Her friend had promised to come, and she refused to believe that they had cancelled their plans without telling her. But when five minutes turned into one hour, and one hour turned into almost two, she couldn’t help but feel tears beginning to prickle in the corner of her eyes.
Why was it always so easy for people to walk all over her? The thought caused for anger to bubble up beneath her skin as she aggressively brushed her hair back, a few tears falling on her cheeks that she wiped away. From her new point of view, she could see a child pointing at her and asking its mother why the young woman over there was crying, but the mother simply shrugged it off with a Honey, don’t you mess with things you do not understand.
She almost laughed out loud at that. The initial anger disappeared and made room for gloomy happiness. Hanna didn’t have many others in her life but she had herself and she thought, hoped, prayed that she could always rely on herself. It was why she could easily pull off the usual, neutral expression when she let her head fall to the side upon spotting a familiar face in the crowd surrounding her. Well, at least this time he looked considerably better, with no bruises or cuts adorning his features.
She would’ve smiled to herself when she noticed an older woman handing the male an apple while saying he should keep himself nourished in the cold and that apples are good for his health.
But Hanna didn’t smile, and instead only wondered who he was. And whether the bruises on his face had left no trace on his soul.
