What to watch while you wait for the next episode of Heated Rivalry...
...if you enjoyed watching the absolute heartbreak in episode 3.
I know, I know...so many people are really done with gay tragedy, and I get that. Sometimes I am too. But sometimes I want to sit and watch something sad and painful and moving. I want to watch a film that has characters fighting the navigate the horrifying and tragic homophobic world in which they find themselves.
The films on this list all offer something more than just a sad gay drama...they all have an authentically queer sensibility about them with a deep yearning, melancholy and anxiety, particularly around issues of being in the closet. And though they are all heartbreaking in their way, they also don't involve any deaths. And there's always some hope at the end.
Small caveat: none of these are in the romance/smut genre. They do all have fairly explicit sex scenes, though.
Plainclothes (2025)
Lucas (Tom Blythe) is a plainclothes cop who entraps gay men cruising in a public restroom in the 1990s Syracuse, New York. Andrew (Russell Tovey) begins as one of Lucas's targets, but of course he doesn't end that way. The film has been described as a 'romantic thriller' and that is fairly accurate...but in a twist for the genre, the anxiety and suspense all stem from the fact that coming out isn't really an option - and yet remaining closeted is unbearable. This film does an amazing job of putting you in the perspective of Lucas, the main character. It may take a bit to get used to the changing aspect ratios and switch between film and video, but it's worth it. It's a beautiful and tense and heartbreaking film - but with a bit of hope at the end.
Carol (2015)
This is a film about yearning. Mutual yearning and romance. Therese (Rooney Mara) works in a department store and is unfulfilled by both her job and her relationship with her boyfriend. Carol (Cate Blanchett) is a wealthy woman in the midst of a messy divorce, fighting for custody of her daughter. They spot each other across the store and that, as they say, is that. Therese is young and inexperienced and Carol is older, with past lovers and a weariness that comes from having to navigate a heteronormative world. Homophobic society is the real villain here - embodied in the cautiousness with which Carol approaches Therese, the custody battle for Carol's daughter, and the necessity of keeping their relationship entirely secret. It's also a great Christmas movie, if Christmas is your thing.
Free Fall (2013)
Marc (Hanno Koffler) is a German cop with a wife and a kid on the way. While training for the riot control unit he meets Kay (Max Riemelt). At first the two can't stand each other, but of course eventually sparks fly. Marc is deeply closeted and of course the police department in which they work is extremely homophobic. As they continue their affair, and as they become more emotionally connected the risk of their discovery rises.
Sodom (2017)
Will (Pip Brignall) is a 20-year-old football player (soccer) on his bachelor party who's been handcuffed to a lamppost as a gag. Michael (Jo Weil) is a 40-year-old retired pianist who lives nearby. Before Will's free of the lamppost, sparks are flying and the two are flirting like mad. So of course they hook up immediately. But what follows is a much deeper connection about sexuality, identity, love, relationships...all of it. And the next morning, Will has a choice to make about what his life will look like going forward.
