Maybe weird question but is there a way to ask for references from coworkers without it being awkward? Especially if you're looking to leave but don't want management finding out?
Absolutely! I did this when I was leaving a company once. You just need to pick some coworkers you trust, explain that you're interviewing for other jobs "just to stay sharp and in practice," and that if they get a call you'd greatly appreciate a positive reference.
You can also ask for references from people like your college advisor or bosses from previous jobs. But if you don't have those folks in your back pocket, a current coworker is a great option.
