The UCR Career Center offers over 200 events on campus each year - ranging from career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and networking events for students. I just attended my first Finance, Accounting & Business Job Fair last week, and I’m not going to lie - it was overwhelming at first. So, here are five important tips for attending a career or job fair!
1. Attire
Dress to impress! You should wear business attire. Your outfit makes or breaks the first impression for the employers, before you even say a word.
2. Research
Do some research on the companies that will be at the fair, and the ones you especially want to network with. It will make it easier to network with them, allowing you to have topics to talk about so the conversation doesn’t get dull.
Also research the types of positions that they will be offering at their company. The Career Center will upload what positions are being offered (full-time, part-time, internships) on their website for the fair.
3. Resume
Bring a good amount of resume copies, about 10 to 15. Make sure your resume is updated with all of your latest information, positions, and achievements. The employers will talk to you about your resume, so you definitely want to make yourself stand out!
4. LinkedIn
Besides emails, a professional way to network is using LinkedIn. I recommend having a completed LinkedIn profile, as many representatives will tell you to add them on LinkedIn. It’s basically a Facebook for professionals!
5. Practice
Like anything in life, practice makes perfect! If you’re a second year, I recommend to start going to these career/job fairs early. Although their isn’t many positions available for students who are first and second years, it will help you with your networking skills.
Going in as a second year, you’re able to show employers and representatives that you’re driven and motivated. This can potentially lead them to offer you a position in the future.
Those are top five tips for anyone attending a career or job fair. For more information on when these fairs are happening, check out the UCR Career Center’s website.
