Nightmares and a Kiss

Confined spaces - that was your biggest nightmare. 

As you watched the world shift and deteriorate, you thought it would change, it would fade. There were things far scarier in this new world, than small spaces ever have been or ever would be. It was rational - you were being rational, repeating this same mantra over and over in your head, all to no avail. Your fear was so far from rational. 

Eyes open wide, your gaze darted up to Daryl. This was hardly a way you'd want to spend the time with him - having a panic attack while locked together in a dark storage room. There were dozens of ways you could have thought of to make this enjoyable, yet your phobia managed to devour every single one of them. 

He could see it, the panic in your eyes and a thin layer of sweat that covered your forehead, both glistening in the soft light that peaked through the tiny window, announcing the day coming to its end. It was soon to be too dark to see, and it freaked you out. 

There were people out there, presumably bad people. Funny how this new world showed everyone's true colors, resulting in you always assuming people were up to no good. Maybe they weren't, maybe they were decent people and there was no need to hide, but the possibility was hardly worth the risk. You knew you had to keep quiet, but you were afraid - afraid you won't make it. Daryl was right there, by your side, and there was no other person in this world, or the former one, you'd rather have there with you, but it wasn't enough. Nothing was ever enough. 

You flinched when he grabbed your shoulders gently, turning you to face him. "Y/N -- Y/N, hey," he whispered almost inaudibly, leaning to your ear, his breath tickling the skin of your neck, "hey, ya're about to freak out, ain't ya girl? Ain't no reason to freak out, alright? We're fine, we'll be alright."

But you weren't fine, and you wondered if he believed the words that rolled off his tongue. Shaking your head, you tried to speak, but found yourself incapable of transforming your thoughts into words, staring blankly into the fading light instead. You felt the sense of impending doom washing over you, your breathing becoming fast and shallow. There was no air, not enough air, as the walls began to close in on you, suffocating.

"Hey, look at me. Y/N -- look at me. Just breathe," Daryl murmured, placing his hands on either side of your face. You don't know for how long it had lasted, but to you, it felt like forever. A forever in a very dark corner of your mind, all alone. But as you took a breath, finally managing to make sense of his words, you could feel his voice pulling you back to reality, his hands on your face anchoring you there, in that room - in a place equally dark as the one in your head, but you weren't alone here, he was with you. Suddenly, the darkness felt so much less threatening, the lack of space so much less scary.  

Your hands found their way to his, still idly resting on your face, and you leaned closer, your forehead resting on his. A silent thank you left your lips, as you moved to place a small peck on his cheek, your lips accidentally brushing his in the crippling dark of the room. You felt your stomach twirl, a horde of butterflies chasing your fears away - but one remained, strengthened and emboldened by that touch of lips, pushing you towards him, forcing you to have a proper taste of his lips. Because dying without having kissed him, now that’t be a nightmare.
