The ‘Odd Mondays Writers’ Group has gone virtual.
Like everything else the long-standing or rather faithful gathering of the ‘Odd Mondays Writers’ Group of San Francisco’s Noe Valley got interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
After coordinating the group for close to 20 years, Judy & Ramon Sender decided it was time to hand the responsibility over to Richard May. He was eager to help push the group into the 21st Century by hosting and coordinating gatherings online via Zoom. And so according to local writer Joseph Sutton, gatherings each month via Zoom have been going on.
Sutton is pleased that the group continues despite the current pandemic setback. Yet in a chat by phone with this reporter, “I miss the in person gatherings at Folio Books on 24th Street,” he said. Before Folio’s it was Haystack Pizza for years prior, also located on Noe Street.
Whether it’s the atmosphere of the uniqueness of Noe Valley or the sheer talent of the writers, having a regular group to share creative work with is a treasure.
This coming February 15th, writers Eveline Kanes, David Watts and Sutton will be reading from a selection of their works. “Visitors are invited to ‘tune in,’ said Sutton just as if they dropped by at Folio’s or Haystack, only ‘virtually’ as that’s how things are done now with this COVID thing still going on.”
Kanes is a poet and literary translator of German and Romanian poetry and prose. She is the author of six books, including several poetry collections. Kanes is a distinguished professor of comparative literature.
Watts is a Haiku poet, an essayist and a writer of short stories mysteries and Westerns, among others things. In addition to being a musician and a Commentator for TV and radio on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’ Watts is a physician at UCSF.
Sutton always looks forward to the monthly gatherings. They are a way to fellowship and observe how the muse is working in others.
With 15 books behind him Sutton is now committed to publishing only in electronic format. “I am done with writing books in print,” he said. Accomplished in both novels and nonfiction, Sutton now in his eighth decade is all about his legacy.
“I want to get it all out,” he exclaimed. He writes mostly nonfiction, journal-style writing these days. He currently has two books published on Amazon in ebook format. And is working on putting together another book based upon his journals. “I’ve been writing since 1970, he said, even earlier when I was a teacher in East Los Angeles.” His novel, ‘A Class of Leaders’ is based upon his real-life experiences teaching in the L.A. Public School system during the turbulent 1960’s.
“e-books are the way to go, Sutton said, especially now that bookshops and libraries are closed.”
Regardless of the format, Sutton like the other writers in the ‘Odd Mondays’ group is appreciative of an audience.
Odd Mondays will meet this February 15th from 7-8 p.m. via Zoom. Here is how to attend:
To get the Zoom link, RSVP on Facebook or request it from ‘Odd Mondays’ Writers’ group via email at: [email protected] You can buy books by the authors from Folio Books San Francisco at Folio Bookstore website.
