I just rewatched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), huuuuuuge recommend as just an overall excellent movie. But it was one of the inspirations allegedly for Stranger Things 5, so here's a rundown of the subtler stuff I noticed as seeming to parallel between the two -- and it's not what you might think. This isn't really meant to explain the parallels since I'm just trying to document.

This is Mike's childhood bike.

This is the childhood bike of the main character of ESOTSM (Joel).

This is Joel's main season outfit.

And here's Mike in a shockingly similar outfit (added bonus of Will in orange, paralleling Clementine?)

In the movie, as Joel is staring at the card of proof that his girlfriend decided to move on without him, the words slowly blur and fade away until the yellow card looks blank.

I spy, with my little eye, a yellow card that looks like it's blank.

As Joel is bucketing through his memories, desperately trying to wake up to stop the procedure that is erasing his memories of Clementine, there's a lot of crazy stuff that happens similar to what happens to Vecna's victims, reality shifting weirdly to force Joel back into the procedure that was inevitable. At one point Clementine appears faceless to Joel (and eventually other characters as well):

The reason I include this is because not only does this look very similar to the illusions Vecna creates to freak out his victims, but also I have a vague recollection, which I am currently unable to substantiate (someone tap in if you've got the goods), that at one point in the finale background Will was faceless. OH and because it's absolutely crack but I still can't help but include it:

just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind since i keep seeing it brought up in relation to the finale and henry messing with memories/the timeline. i’m pretty positive the duffers had mentioned the movie and suggested to watch it before s5, i can’t find where they said it though.

also saw this post pointing out the green beanie/orange hoodie comparison. so i put on my byler lens while watching. if the theories about Will still being possessed, the memories blending, playgate, and all that stuff are true, oh baby we’re in for a beautifully chaotic finale with byler endgame.

my hope isn’t super high though because vol2 shattered a lot of my faith in the duffers, but i think it could be such a cool and great way to have an epic finale and re-include mike
