Peter Cushing as John Banning in The Mummy (1959)
Watercolors on Paper, 8.5" x 11", 2024
By Josh Ryals
Character: John Banning
From: The Mummy (1959)
Representation: Disability (limp, mobility-impaired)
Their Importance: He breaks his leg during the opening archaeological dig resulting in a permanent limp when he refuses to leave for treatment. While it’s a “dramatic handicap”- put in to make the scares aimed at him more threatening and explain why he doesn’t just run away from the shambling mummy there are no scenes where it’s played for pity value (incredibly rare for any kind of disabled character) with Banning (a calmly well-adjusted adventurer and loving husband-also way too uncommon for disabled characters) being cheerily self-deprecating about his difficulties. He still gets plenty of conventional action hero scenes. Even when he’s taking part in action sequences like the famous scene where he impales the mummy or when he’s desperately trying to run after his endangered love interest his condition never conveniently goes away like in most action films. Also, I can’t think of many older works where a disabled character gets a happy ending without a magical cure (not a lot of newer ones either).
Thanks to anon for the write-up!

Happy disability pride month! 💚🩵🤍💛❤️
Wanted to draw a little something for disability pride with some disabled Cushing characters! (Michael Carmichael: amputee, prosthetic user, ptsd. Sherlock Holmes: headcanoned autism. John Banning: has a limp as a result of breaking his leg)
