That's a motorcycle in the background. An alternate photograph with a clearer shot of the bike was used for the picture sleeve for the album's lead single, "Hurts So Good".

John finally hit the jackpot with this album. Peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the album spawned three Top 40 singles, the aforementioned "Hurts So Good" (No. 2), "Jack & Diane" (No. 1, his first and only one to date), and "Hand to Hold On To" (No. 19).

In addition, this was the first album co-produced with Don Gehman (who had previously worked with Mellencamp on 1979's John Cougar). He would go on to co-produce Mellencamp's next three albums.
