'I hadn't noticed before, but the centre bit of the console - the time rotor, as the Doctor used to call it - had been removed. Protruding from it was the head and chest of... well, I wasn't sure. It had to be a Time Lord, but it looked like one who had been caught impossibly in the middle of regeneration. The left side was an old woman with close-cropped silver hair, one blue eye and deep lines on her face, but the right side was a girl, maybe 10 years old, with long brown hair and one green eye. The two halves of the head were the same size, more or less, with a kind of rough, lumpy dividing line between them, as if the body's incredible Time Lord metabolism had tried to make the best of a bad job but not done very well.' 'Her voice started out old and cracked, but gradually segued into something younger and more hesitant as she spoke.' "'I found myself like this - neither one thing nor another. Caught in between two different bodies.'" 'Half of her face was twisted in terror, but the other half was gazing upwards in exultation [...] Half of her was paralysed with fear; half was paralysed in near-religious ecstasy.'

So this is two weeks in a row where I don't have much to say 😅 That might be due in part to the fact that this is the first episode of the show to take place entirely in the Temporal Zone. But fear not! It'll only get better from here; I do still have a few fun facts for this episode, and I've already got a lot planned for the season finale post, and I haven't even rewatched it yet. And as much as I love Season One, this show only gets better after this!

But for now, this episode! For starters, there are a couple of references to DC Comics in this episode. When Sara is preparing to be the navigator, she asks what "Jurgens Ridge" is. And while we never find out what it is in-universe, the name is a reference to Dan Jurgens, the writer and artist for the DC Comics series Time Masters: Vanishing Point. And when they arrive at the Vanishing Point later in the episode, Rip requests an assembly of the Time Council in accordance with General Order 52, which is a reference to the DC Comics series 52. And I doubt they knew it at the time, but the comic series 52 features multiple characters who will eventually appear in DC's Legends of Tomorrow in some capacity.

We also get a glimpse of how petty Vandal Savage is at the Vanishing Point after Rip has been put in his cell. Savage taunts him with the novelty pen that Rip used to escape him back in Egypt in 1700 BCE, which he claimed not to have known about earlier in the episode. But Savage didn't plan on being captured by the Legends in the last episode, so he couldn't have planned to have it on him to torment Rip. That means that he's kept it with him at all times in the hopes that he would get a chance like this, which is a very funny detail about an otherwise terrifying villain.

And this is purely speculation, but throughout the episode, Leonard talks about a job he and Mick once pulled that went south, called "Alexa". It didn't happen today, but I vividly remember watching this episode for the very first time and our Alexa being triggered every time he said it. And considering the Alexa had been out for about a year when this episode was filmed, it's entirely possible that this was done intentionally as a prank on the viewers. It certainly seems like something Leonard Snart would approve of 🤣

And now, for a few things I noticed that relate to later episodes of the show! If you're only on this episode, please be warned that there are spoilers under the cut!

This episode heavily hints toward the fact that Sara will take over as the rightful captain next season. First, she is the only one to notice that the Waverider is being pushed beyond its limits, which leads her to question if Rip is making the right decision. He isn't, of course, and she ends up being right, proving that things would've gone a lot better for them all if she had been in charge. Then, later, Rip comments that she is someone who can "make tough calls under extreme pressure," which is one of the most important attributes that a good leader needs to have. This is shortly followed by her taking a seat in the Captain's chair for the very first time, and damn, nothing has ever felt so right! And as if she needed to give us any more proof that she's meant to be the Captain, she later says to Rip, "And what did you do to your shoulder?" in the first time she ever used her Time Mom™️ voice!!! I didn't remember that it appears this early in the show, and hearing it felt like a warm, comforting hug (that was also extremely sexy at the same time). I do truly love this season, but I'm so happy that we've almost reached the point when Sara taking her rightful place as the Captain becomes a reality! 🥰

Another Sara Lance quote from this episode is when she tells Vandal Savage, "I'd tell you to go to hell, but you'd probably just feel at home there." And as we learn from my favorite cameo appearance of all time in Season Four Episode Sixteen, Hey, World!, she's right! He does feel right at home in hell. He ends up becoming one of the torturers instead of the one being tortured, which we know from Astra takes a lot of work and ruthlessness, and he loves playing giant Jenga 😂

I forgot how good River of Time was.

Probably one of the best songs to get someone into Ayreon with. It's relatively short, has almost all the folksy/metal/symphonic/electronic bits that make up Ayreon's sound, and has a good amount of guest vocalists to showcase the story elements.

Also probably my favourite Ayreon song.

The variety of different cultures and styles drew me to the River of Time boxes, and I was especially pleased to pull the Dunhuang figure. Though I like them all (bar the Time Traveller) I'd love to get the Egyptian, or even Atlantis, figures if I ever find the boxes again.

How like fish we are: ready, nay eager, to seize upon whatever new thing some wind of circumstance shakes down upon the river of time! And how we rue our haste, finding the gilded morsel to contain a hook. Even so, I think there is some virtue in eagerness, whether its object prove true or false. How utterly dull would be a wholly prudent man, or trout, or world!
