John Kani: 'Was my journey worth it? Yes, because I have my dignity'

I’m uncomfortable when actors are called “brave”, but in John Kani’s case it is apt. The first three decades of the 76-year-old South Africa

Since apartheid ended in 1994, the early promise of the Mandela-led “rainbow nation” has been tarnished by corruption, continued economic inequality and further violence, which Kani believes has led later generations to forget his generation’s struggle. Hence his play, Kunene And The King, in which he plays an oncology nurse for a wealthy white actor — played by fellow South African Antony Sher — who plans to play King Lear but is dying of liver cancer.

Kani was Caliban to Sher’s Prospero in a colonial-accented production of The Tempest directed by Janice Honeyman for the RSC in 2009. “Tony and I had always wanted to act together,” he says, “and I had an idea to write something that would give us a little more meat to chew on than The Tempest.”

The play that changed my life: Janet Suzman on staging Othello in apartheid South Africa

Putting on Shakespeare’s tragedy at Johannesburg’s Market theatre was a risky endeavour and caused an astonishing reaction

It would be the first time I had ever directed. My Othello was just there in the shape of John Kani who I had known since he was a young activist. 

...He wouldn’t do anything without consulting Wally because how is a dead white male representing a political stance? I had to explain that I considered Shakespeare to be a protest writer, which I still do. All his plays are complex, but that play is about a so-called “unnatural” relationship. To whom is it unnatural? To Desdemona, Othello was the most natural thing in the world. “I saw Othello’s visage in his mind,” she says. Not in his skin colour.
