has this been done yet?
Since as in night's deck-watch ye show, Why, lads, so silent here to me, Your watchmate of times long ago? Once, for all the darkling sea, You your voices raised how clearly, Striking in when tempest sung; Hoisting up the storm-sail cheerly, Life is storm–let storm! you rung. Taking things as fated merely, Childlike though the world ye spanned; Nor holding unto life too dearly, Ye who held your lives in hand– Skimmers, who on oceans four Petrels were, and larks ashore...

Melville retired from his customs house job in 1885, aided by funds from his wife’s inheritances. He continued to write poetry, even self-publishing his last two volumes of poetry—John Marr and Other Sailors, with Some Sea-Pieces (1888) and Timoleon and Other Ventures in Minor Verse (1891)—published in editions of twenty-five copies each.
He also wrote but didn’t finish to his satisfaction the story of Billy Budd, first published in 1924.
Weeds and Wildings with a Rose or Two was an unfinished collection of poems Melville had been working on at the time of his death.
ART
In placid hours well-pleased we dream Of many a brave unbodied scheme. But form to lend, pulsed life create, What unlike things must meet and mate: A flame to melt--a wind to freeze; Sad patience--joyous energies; Humility--yet pride and scorn; Instinct and study; love and hate; Audacity--reverence. These must mate, And fuse with Jacob's mystic heart, To wrestle with the angel--Art. Herman Melville
