Album Review: Crack the Sky - Tribes

Crack the Sky recycles musical ideas from the 1960s to the 1990s and uses them to deliver themes from present-day America on its latest - 18th - LP.

Tribes has music that’s Beatles-inspired, but not Beatlesque, on “Another Beautiful Day;” that combines early U2 and Big Country on “We Don’t Know;” and melds disco and scratching on “Alligator Man.” The title track is unimaginative, rock ‘n’ roll bombast and “Another Civil War” incorporates banjo - and the word libtard - into an otherwise-incongruous, bass-heavy musical landscape as John Palumbo sings:

You hate me ’cause I don’t think like you do/I hate you, looks like we’re heading to/another civil war

Cramming 13 songs into just over an hour, Tribes has a little bit of nearly everything. The only thing missing is that classic Crack the Sky sound and song craft found on the band’s best albums.
