john splithoff - "far from here"
sometimes i come across a name in the thousands of pitches sent to no soap radio's email, and i go "why does that name sound so familiar?" in the case of john splithoff, that's because he used to perform at all the clubs i would go to back in my early nyc days (mercury lounge, rockwood music hall, aka the places i wished i could perform.) but it's also because john's songwriting, production, and performance skills have touched the work of many other artists, including teddy swims, toro y moi, fletcher, andy grammer, ben folds, and freakin' sting. that's a hell of a resume.
john put out his new studio album far from here on 3/21/25 (last weekend at the time of posting), and it's another great collection of his funky/romantic stylings rife with his passionate voice. it's an album all about change, of which splithoff has weathered a lot since the start of his career: moving from chicago to new york, popping off with his 2016 song "sing to you", dealing with covid, moving to la in 2022, and making all sorts of big decisions regarding labels, business partnerships, and his own music that would help his career get off the ground.
"there's been so much movement in my life the past few years that I often forget to take a step back and consider how much has changed," splithoff says about the inspiration for far from here. "the record is a lot like looking through an old photo album - reminding me of who I was, who I am, and gives me some inspiration for who I hope to be going forward.”
on the title track featured here today on no soap radio, john captures that acknowledgement of change, doting on how his relationships have shifted as he's moved from one place to another. he's built incredible relationships with people, helping their music as they help his, but often it means leaving family and friends behind. anyone who has made a big move can relate to such a feeling. despite the success john's had, those previous relationships still linger, influencing "far from here" and all the other tracks on john's new album.
if you like soulful pop, such as teddy swims and benson boone, you'll certainly like john's music. in fact, john opened for teddy back in 2024, allowing two incredibly vibrant and passionate artists to share the stage. at the time of this posting, john is about to hit the road again, headlining a 25-date tour beginning 3/29/25 in phoenix. click here for tour dates.
