Shadowhunters 3.06 - Immediate Reaction

Like a smart little firecracker, Clary goes to Magnus for help identifying the Demon she encountered last episode and he proceeds to figure everything out in .5 seconds with the help of a certain Silent Brother (I’m sorry that scene must have been so weird to film #teleawkward but Brother Zacharia is hot!!!! ) Anyway, Magnus then faces off with the Owl after Clary throws away her weapons. again… #comeongirl #epicwarlockslidetotherescue #duh and Luke, our hot cop in action, shoots the owl - thus revealing Owl!Jace to Clary, Magnus and Luke - but Ollie is possessed now and is headed off to kill her lady lover. #99problems

If both the Head of the Institute and the Head of Security are out getting drinks, who is in charge at the institute and more importantly, don’t you people have a demon to find? Never mind Magnus is taking care of it… (by the way, was Alec drinking Magnus’ heartache drink???) I wonder how Alec will react when he finds out that while he was out getting drunk and being salty, Magnus was actually busy doing his boyfriends damn job and finding the Owl’s identity? (they aren’t even fighting about the same thing, come on boys get back on track now, we’re tired)

Underhill is a nice dude who supports Alec as Head of the Institute, defends Alec’s mother from a jerk Shadowhunter guy with bad hair #stepoffjerkguy... Then he let his superior officer vent while drunk, offering him an escape from awkward drunk!Family time and solid relationship advice... I love that he mentioned that Shadowhunters fall in love once and maybe Alec’s awesome warlock boyfriend doesn’t understand their ways… (seriously the guy is a Malec fanboy #betterhalf #legiteveryoneshipsmalec  - Underhill, Maryse, Izzy, Clary.)

Maryse should let her hair down more often… #justsaying..

For real can Charlie not see the Runes all over Izzy and her brothers??? -- Smooth Sizzy moment and more badass Izzy, but for real why didn’t she pull out her whip against Heidi sooner? that bitch should have been dead on the first hit - or did Raphael’s experiments make her strong? #valentinemuch?? #aca-what????

Jace and Alec’s scene was so awkward like… brothers. O wait… and why is possessed Jace holding Clary’s hand??? #badtake #comeoneditorsdoyouworkhere????

Why did Clary call Luke from outside the hunters moon to ask if he was at the hunters moon?... #justsaying

Ollie still hasn't learned to shut up or at least whisper and now she’s possessed. Let’s be honest people, we all saw it coming 

Was Simon right to have the Praetor deal with Heidi? He has no way of knowing they aren’t worse than the Clave…

Happy birthday to captain John Underhill, who took the last name to honor his hobbit ancestors

History has a very interesting ways of making an individual to be both a hero and a villain. The perspective that one has dictates how said individual is viewed. One such example is Christopher Columbus. To some he’s a symbol of national pride. To others, he’s the catalyst for the decimation of Natives in the “New World” Again, hero and villain based on POV. 

With that in mind, here is my next Street Names of NYC post. Underhill Avenue in Brooklyn is named after Captain John Underhill, (October 7, 1597 - July 21, 1672) who was a notorious “Indian pacifier” during the early years of Colonial America. Underhill was born to British parents in the Netherlands and would become a professional soldier. By 1630, Underhill was recruited by the Massachusetts Bay Colony to train the militia. It would be in the Pequot Wars seven years later that Underhill would earn his nom de guerre of “Indian Killer.”

The abstract for the listing for the Captain Underhill penned Newes from America; Or, A New and Experimentall Discoverie of New England; Containing, A Trve Relation of Their War-like Proceedings These Two Yeares Last Past, with a Figure of the Indian Fort, or Palizado from the DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln website briefly describes the actions of Captain Underhill, Captain John Mason and their militia during the Pequot War:

An army of about 100 militia under Underhill and John Mason left Saybrook by ship, landed on the western shore of the Narragansett Bay and enlisted the Narragansetts and Eastern Niantics as allies. They marched overland two days westward and surprised the Pequot fortified village near Mystic on May 26, 1637. The English attacked at dawn, and fired the village; the fleeing inhabitants were “received and entertained with the point of the sword.” Of the 600–800 village inhabitants, there were only 14 survivors. The next three months were spent searching and destroying or capturing the remaining members of the tribe. Most Pequot survivors were either sold in the West Indies or given to the Indian allies as slaves.

As most of the colonial mercenaries, the job of “pacifying the natives” was done with the sword in one hand and the word of God in the other. Underhill was no different than his fellow mercenaries in the Caribbean and South America. You can access Captain Underhill’s work here in PDF format: Newes of America.

After his term with the Massachusetts Bay Colony ended, Captain Underhill would be sent packing due to the religious politics at the time. Captain Underhill would support Rev. John Wheelwright’s theological view which was deemed heretical by the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Captain Underhill would be banished from the colony, along with Rev. Wheelwright, Anne Hutchinson and their supporters. 

After spending time in Europe, Captain Underhill would return to the colonies, settling in New Hampshire. He would continue his assault on the native populations of the area while rising to the position of Governor of New Hampshire. He would later take his services to Connecticut and then he would be hired by the New Amsterdam colony in 1644 in what would be known as Kieft’s War to do what he did best: pacify the natives.

Using John Underhill and his mercenaries as their primary enforcer, English and Dutch colonials collaborated strategically to annihilate the Hackensack, Haverstraw, Munsee, Navasink, Raritan and Tappan bands from New Jersey; the Wecquaesgeek, Sintsink, Kitchawank, Nochpeem, Siwanoy, Tankiteke, and Wappinger from east of the Hudson; and the Canarsee, Manhattan, Rockaway, Matinecock, Massapequa (Marsapeque), Secatoag, and Merrick Indians on Long Island.

The irony of all this is the number of tribal names that can be recognized today as neighborhoods in a number of states in the Northeast United States including Brooklyn where Underhill Avenue is located. 

Captain John Underhill died on July 21, 1672 and was interred at the Underhill family burial grounds in village of Lattingtown, Town of Oyster Bay, NY, on Long Island.

So going back to the idea of someone being a hero or a villain. For those who beileve in the idea of Manifest Destiny for the United States, Captain Underhill surely was a hero. He helped pacify the natives and helped the early colonies gain much needed land to consolidate themselves. For those who view Underhill’s acts of violence against Men, Women and children alike in the name of “pacification” with horror, then you know how Captain Underhill is seen. I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

In a future episode I want to see Underhill in the background of a scene walking up to a man in the institute and both of them smiling while they talk, and then in another episode you see them laughing together, and maybe at some point someone says Underhill’s had the night off because he’s got a date, and all these little mentions and subtle moments in the background until we see Underhill walking round the institute holding hands with the other shadowhunter or someone says “Underhill and his boyfriend.” Show that Malec isn’t in fact the only gay relationship in the shadowworld, show how Shadowhunters being gay isn’t rare it’s just hidden, show how Alec coming out has changed the atmosphere of the institute to one of tolerance in a subtle but noticeable way, so the place where Alec was once scared to be seen even stood next to Magnus is now where gay Shadowhunters can be with their partners openly and happily.
