Maybe it’s because I started my first playthrough with the Streetkid background, but I really like the idea of Johnny, after he’s already with V, seeing all of V’s ambitions to become something great in Night City, seeing how ingrained they are with the community (Mama Welles, Padre, Misty, Vik, etc.), seeing how they don’t let anything stop them going through everything with him the engram and arasaka and all the other shit going on, seeing them at they’re most vulnerable with whichever partner they choose to be with, seeing just how much life they have left to live despite the fact that he is erasing them completely, just becoming almost aggressively protective over them and wanting to make certain that they do everything the can to get the engram out safely so that V can survive. He wants V to live.

And maybe it’s because he knows the feeling of losing before you’re ready. He never got to see the fall of Arasaka no matter how hard he tried to bring it down himself. He never got to see Samurai do great things during their time. He never got to be with Alt… He needs V to live, and god fucking damnit as annoying as he pretends to find them, as shitty music taste that they have (in his words), as much of a gonk they can be when it comes to acting on principle and giving a big “fuck you” to the establishment that forced them together, as much as he pretends he doesn’t care about V, he does. Johnny needs V to live, and he will do everything in his power to make sure that they can.
