If you ask the all-time greats they’ll tell you they always knew they had greatness in them. They always knew they were the best, and would often carry themselves as such. Being the best was a constant mindset, and oftentimes a driving force to keep working hard. Even players that aren’t the best will walk into a room with the mindset that they belong in the club. Because if you don’t believe in yourself, who else will? Stockton was that rare case of the opposite. When he first got to the league he believed he didn’t belong. I’m not talking about being elite; I mean he literally didn’t think he belonged in the NBA. Yes he was a first round pick - 16th overall, in fact. But Stock was an undersized point guard from a mid-major college program who didn’t receive much buzz until months before the draft. When he first got to Utah, Stockton felt that the dream could end at any moment. That he’d be one-and-done in the league once everyone figured him out. Instead of investing in a house, he took his NBA paycheck and rented a fully furnished, one-bedroom apartment in Salt Lake City. He’d buy chili in a can and he’d stay in eating homemade lasagna for dinner to save money. There was no way he was going to last long in the NBA, and the money earned from his short stint would set him up nicely after his brief career. Stockton appeared to shortchange himself. He retired from the NBA 19 years later having played his entire career with the team that drafted him. Stockton’s the NBA record holder for career assists and steals, and it doesn’t look like someone will pass him anytime soon. He has a statue of himself outside of the Jazz home arena, and he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. The man who never believed he belonged is now widely considered as one of the best to ever play the position. The moral of the story is that anyone is capable of great things - so you should believe in yourself. But even if you don’t, that’s ok too. Keep working hard and you might surprise yourself.
