Yeah, uh, I feel like there was a lot that could have been done better about how Edelgard's story was handled that would have made me more sympathetic to her.

It’s interesting coming into this route from Silver Snow, because this one feels so much more calculated in how much it tries to paint Edelgard in the worst possible light. Like she’s just as much of an antagonist in Silver Snow, but you’ve also got moments like Seteth expressing wonder when they get to the Empire and discover that the populace isn’t controlled by fear, and actually seems to really like their emperor? Moments like that, where the characters’ negative assumptions about her are challenged, never make it into AM. 

Which, fine, she’s supposed to be the villain in this route, but of course her own route is severely shortened, doesn’t have even a fraction of the character-focused content that Dimitri gets, and a lot of her backstory has to be pieced together from other people’s backstories across multiple routes. So yeah, I think the writing really did her dirty and is responsible for a lot of the unnecessary antagonism between the fans.

Professor Robot really doesn't seem calibrated for analyzing fiction, despite ostensibly having it as a setting. I ran a couple of my fics through and a lot of the stuff it picks out seems very much about blanding the verbiage down for "readability."

Yeah, that’s I think one of the issues with most of these AI-powered copy editors. (Or perhaps, just a bias of their programming.) EditMinion, Hemingway, and AutoCrit similarly ding me when I start to get florid or wordy.

(But they don’t understand! I need those words. All of them. I mean, all of them except for the ones that shouldn’t be there because of grammatical or spelling issues.)

They’re definitely no real substitute for a good beta, but are helpful in a pinch to catch some common errors.

It is both reassuring and terrifying to know that this is not just a New Writer experience. At least we’re in good company!

Writer Questions

@joiedecombat tagged me for this little question game.  Looked like a bit of fun (and thinking).  Currently I have (marginally successfully) only been focusing on one WIP: Countdown | Read on AO3 | Read on Pillowfort 

1. What was the idea that started the story?

One of the first things I wrote when I jumped onto this fanfic writing train was a few small sentences of reaction to Ziost getting consumed by the emperor.  Slightly inspired by Obi-Wan’s reaction to Alderaan getting blown up in A New Hope (which my daughter was like “WHAT HAPPENED TO EARTH?”).  After a few more sentences started being inspired from the events surrounding Ziost happened, I decided that since I already had a few prompts written for it, I’d take the prompts and make a story out of them.  It started with five sentences.  Now it’s 8 chapters (angling for 10).

2. Did you make an outline? Have you stuck to it?

My outline consisted of a list of Chapter Names and prompts that I have done within the Ziost timeline.  For the most part I’ve stuck to it, sliding in extra chapter name and then removing an extra one that wasn’t working for me.  It’s not really super exciting, but I was quite proud of my chapter list.

3. What’s your favorite part of your story?

Currently, a lot of my favorite bits are the banter.  Especially Kira and sassing most of the situation (as she does).  For specific examples, Kira and stabbing Theron with kolto, as well as the comment about T7 being our “emotional support astromech droid.”  There are a few other favorite bits, but I think I’ll have a better grasp of which is my absolute favorite part after I finish off the last two chapters.

4. Who is your favorite character and why?

It’s a toss up between Kira and Theron really.  Both have some pretty great moments, but I think I’m leaning more to Kira at this moment.  Her general personality kept a very dark story a lot less dark.

5. Did anything happen that surprised you as you were writing? A plot point, or characters’ actions, etc?

The biggest part that surprised me is that I have actually managed to stick with writing it.  Other than that, a lot of it was some of the stuff that happened with Kira.  She had a tendency to just take over a few times and leave me giggling.

Trying to finish a SWTOR mini fic that’s been back burnered for, uh, months T_T

It's always hard to go back to projects. (Have you tried chanting "EMPHASIS ON /MINI/" at yourself? I've had to do that before 😂)

SWTOR asks: 40, 41, 61?

40. Oh shit, it’s been 5 years? How do they feel about that?

Jyana did not handle the five years thing very well, but she also didn’t really allow herself to really rest long enough to think about it, except in a few small instances.  Until they got to Odessen, she had one small moment of rest with T7, but otherwise she kept herself too busy to think about it because for a while, she was too afraid to go back to sleep.  The first time she really slept was with T7 when they were headed back to Asylum before Arcaan stabbed her.  Sleeping was still difficult for her, so she’d either exhaust herself with some kind of work or training, or Theron would help her relax.  Every once in a while, she has to remind herself that she’s missing five years when others talk about things that happened while she was in carbonite.  Even after all this time, she’s still not completely over those lost years.

41. If applicable, how did they feel about their love interest’s letter?

Jyana wasn’t even sure Theron would still be alive after five years, so when she saw that message she nearly cried.  She still worried that something had happened to him between the time he’d sent the letter and the time she got to see it, though T7 alleviated those fears and shared with her that he had missed him.  She was afraid he’d forgotten her or had moved on, but seeing that letter gave her hope that he’d not forgotten her.  Probably why she glomped the hell out of him when she saw him on Odessen.

61. Torian or Vette? Why?

In an Out of Character context, I chose Vette the first time I played through KOTET so when I went through the second time on Jy, I wanted to see the other option.  I honestly despise this choice, because I can see numerous ways the choice can be erased utilizing the characters you have.  Within the context of my headcanon, this choice does not exist.  Jy, Senya, and Arcaan went to back up Vette while Lana and Theron went to back up Torian.  In the end neither die, but who Vaylin offs at the end of the chapter in their place, I have yet to determine.  Probably an NPC of some sort.
