[Joint Training Arc]
…
Okay, one thing I often see spoken about in the Class B fanbase is “they should’ve won the Joint Training!!” Which, honestly yeah, I wish they did—but why they lost makes total sense.
Yes, it would’ve been nice if they won so they could have SOMETHING! But I also completely understand why Class B lost the Joint Training. To understand you must look at each round closely.
The reasons why have to do with both what happened in the battles + experience. Let’s be honest, Class A facing villains time and time again has made them better with combat, even All Might himself comments on how Class B’s approach to hero training has been more traditional. That’s part of the reason why I think Class A won, but I’m not commenting on that part too much in this.
SO… let me discuss each round, some of the stuff that happens, a few of the things that bother me about those rounds, and so on!
…
ROUND 1: Ibara, Jurota, Kosei, Hiryu VS. Tsuyu, Eijiro, Koji, Denki, Hitoshi
(1) Okay, let’s talk about Kosei getting captured first. While I personally wish he showed off more, I think he had plenty of “screen time” for that battle. He showed his new move which is what’s important to me.
Kosei getting captured makes sense, honestly, but that’s if you infer certain things. Kosei probably would’ve been the biggest problem for Hitoshi, because of his “Air Prison” move (this is assuming Ibara’s vines don’t let sound through—which I’m not sure if they do or not). His move wouldn’t let sound through, and sure the others could break it, during an active battle, they probably wouldn’t have time. Kosei would’ve been able to stop Hitoshi, making it so they didn’t have to worry about his voice modifier.
All this to say, you can possibly infer Tsuyu realized that. She captured him after Hitoshi had used his voice changer, so Kosei and Jurota knew about it now—considering Kosei instantly traps Hitoshi right after. Kosei was open for a second, when he went to dodge Denki’s attack, which gave Tsuyu the chance to capture him. Looking at the scene, it could’ve been that she captured him partly because it was part of the training + she realized he’d be an issue going forward and had to get rid of him. Of course this is all inference, not necessarily true, but possible. So it makes sense why Kosei was captured, and having him captured lowered Class B’s chance of winning the round.
(2) On the topic of Hitoshi’s voice changer, that I think is the big reason why Class B lost this round. No one on the other team knew Hitoshi could do that, shown by how surprised Kosei was when Hitoshi copied his voice to brainwash Jurota. This led to the other three not being able to communicate, leaving them acting on their own. Ibara got brainwash, Jurota got fixated on taking down Hitoshi, and Hiryu started panicking because he couldn’t speak to his teammates.
(3) Speaking of Hiryu, his reaction made a ton of sense. He realized he wasn’t able to communicate with his teammates, so he panicked. It’s shown in how he fights. When he was having his mini battle with Tsuyu, he was attacking wildly, not necessarily thinking—shown by how he groans in frustration (at least in the sub). All of that team’s reactions to Hitoshi’s ability is part of the reason why they lost, considering they either panicked or just stopped communicating (or got controlled like Ibara did).
- Overall, it makes sense as to why Class B lost Round One—they didn’t know about Hitoshi’s voice changer, and the fact they didn’t know about it—meaning they weren’t prepared for it—caused them to lose the ability to communicate. That lack of communication is one of the bigger reasons they lost that round. Again, they may have had a bigger chance of winning if Kosei wasn’t captured (assuming Ibara’s vines still allow sound). Of course not saying they WOULD have one, but their chance may have been bigger.
…
ROUND 2: Itsuka, Shihai, Kinoko, Manga VS. Yuga, Fumikage, Toru, Momo
- Honestly, I’m not going to discuss this round too much. Class B won it, and it makes sense why—they separated Class A’s team and all. Fumikage taking on Shihai and Kinoko was neat, and it was cool while it lasted, but then it showed Kinoko’s ability to make mushrooms suffocate people (which WOW—). The fight between Itsuka and Momo was interesting, and it made sense why Momo lost to Itsuka. Sorry, but I won’t touch on this one too much, since I don’t feel the need to discuss it.
…
ROUND 3: Sen, Pony, Tetsutetsu, Juzo VS. Tenya, Mashirao, Shoji, Shoto
(1) One of the first things I’m going to speak about isn’t necessarily about the round itself, more about a character and his quirk. Sen… Something that has always bothered me was the fact that this round revealed that Sen can still be grabbed despite his quirk being active, which makes no sense LOGICALLY. When trying to touch a moving drill, you just bounce off, but Sen can still be grabbed despite spinning? It doesn’t make sense. Maybe it’s also because of how easily it seemed to be able to grab him. When Tenya grabbed him, there wasn’t much struggle or anything, Tenya seemed perfectly fine while holding him. It honestly maybe would’ve been more logical if they showed that Tenya was struggling to hold him, as in Sen occasionally slipped out but then was just grabbed again. I dunno—just SOMETHING.
Speaking of Sen… let’s be honest, with how he was fighting, if he wasn’t captured his team probably would’ve won instead of it being a draw.
(2) I seriously don’t think there’s much to speak about this round either other than Sen’s quirk not making sense. The events that led up to the draw makes sense in my opinion, so I won’t discuss it much more.
…
ROUND 4: Yosetsu, Togaru, Setsuna, Kojiro VS. Rikido, Kyoka, Hanta Katsuki
(1) This for sure was a round! Honestly, it’s another one of those where something happened that caught Class B off guard. They didn’t expect Katsuki to be a “team player”. As far as Class B knew, Katsuki was so arrogant and refused to work with a team, so when he started doing that, it threw them off. They went into the battle EXPECTING Katsuki to act out, but he didn’t, so they got confused.
(2) Sigh… YOSETSU’S POTENTIAL WAS WASTED. Honestly, this may be where I get biased (shockingly not about Kosei). They showed that Yosetsu was able to hide without making a sound, showed how quick he can move with his quirk, and he captured Katsuki. Only for Katsuki to be immediately broken free and then for Kyoka to take Yosetsu out in like 5 seconds. It felt like they pulled a moment of Yosetsu showing off, only to instantly be stopped (honestly… you could say it’s similar to what happened with Sen and Kosei). I really don’t know what to say about this moment, but I don’t like how they portrayed Yosetsu during this fight.
- Other than that moment with Yosetsu, I think it makes sense why Class B lost this round. Again, because something they didn’t expect happened.
…
ROUND 5: Yui, Nirengeki, Neito, Reiko, Hitoshi VS. Mina, Ochako, Izuku, Minoru
(1) This is again a round that something no one expected happened, but honestly the circumstances of it I feel don’t warrant a win. Izuku unlocked Black Whip, which wasn’t expected on both sides, but it honestly shouldn’t excuse Class B losing. Not speaking on this too much, however.
(2) Also this isn’t about Class B but I need to say it …Was Minoru smashing into Mina’s chest necessary…? That’s all I’m going to say. There wasn’t a need for it.
- I dunno what to say about this round, but Izuku unlocking a new ability isn’t necessarily why Class B lost. I feel like despite that they still could’ve won. It’s hard to explain.
…
All in all, it does make sense why Class B didn’t win, considering events during the rounds and experience. I will say there were a few things that I just wasn’t sure on how to speak about—most of my comments are for around 1 honestly.
