This week Creation Click DC is excited to present our very first female Creator, Jaine! A confidant and amazingly talented artist that does not sell herself short of her true potential. The 24 year old artist greeted us on a chilly March evening with pizza, lots of conversation, and personality as big and bouncy as her curls.
“Art is life”
As soon as she was old enough to pick up a Crayola crayon and put it to paper Jaine knew that she was destined to be an artist. She would create doodles and pieces that were full of color and interest. However, she did not have a specific direction for her art until it was realized in her first few years at Montgomery College where she studies art and design. Her most influential professors is Kate Kretz, who assisted in guiding Jaine’s art in to the direction that is best for her. Kretz helped her realize that art can be more than strokes of a brush on a surface, but more so an emotion, a story, something to shake the mind into a process of thoughts. Since then, Jaine makes sure to put maximum effort in to all her pieces so they can not only be beautiful but to inspire as well.
Most of Jaine’s ideas are motivated by her personal travels. Since she was a child, she and her family have traveled to many different places across the East Coast; which allowed her to experience different parts of society and ways of life. To this day Jaine still goes on her own adventures. It can stem from a nightly stroll through Georgetown, or a 24 hour road trip to New York (which ever she is in the mood for). She is constantly seeks outward to find new inspiration for the next project.
“ I like being out in the world [to be] able to watch the world work” .
She says through girlish giggles as she shares a few stories of the special moments she saw growing up.
What makes Jaine’s artistry so unique is that it is all about experimentation. By using different materials from paper towels to aluminum to wood she prohibits herself from being bound to one dimension. She challenges herself in this way because it helps her add levels to her skill, and to show that she has the power to make anything she touches beautiful.
Her actual process starts with no set plan at all. She allows her mind to freestyle what ever it sees in the moment. Then steps back to observe the piece to see what sense it makes to her, and afterwards returns to it adding in with more details to ensure the piece also can make sense to the viewer. Jaine’s goal with any of her artistic compositions is to always ignite imagination and creativity in ones head.
“I want to keep people creative!”
Whether it be her bold colors, abstract shapes, or her fantastic textures her art will always manage to make an impact on you.
When asked about her future plans with her talents the twinkle in her eyes suddenly dims to a sharp gaze,
“I want people to respect my business because art is a business”, she says assertively.
For Jaine, painting is not a mere hobby or a special talent. Art is her business. She manufactures, invest, and sells her art like any other enterprise. She sees the creative and marketable aspect of art as a union that needs to be recognized and respected. She looks at prominent American designer and business woman, Iris Apfel, as an example of how one can become successful through their own creativity and execution. What draws Jaine to Apfel is that she is a creator in all aspects. She is profoundly talented and successful in all the dimensions she works in. She does not limit her skills to just one category. Jaine sees her future success to mirror that of Ms. Apfel as her skills as a creator continue to increase.
Due to this goal, Jaine makes sure that she keeps her hands in various mediums. Aside from paintings, she dabbles in jewelry design with bead and wire work; as well as, graphic designs on logos and event flyers.
Her newest project is a blend between painting and photography. For summer 2016 Jaine will bring her art to life, literally, in “living Jaine paintings” by designing and photographing her own body painting photo shoots all through out the DMV!
:3 WORDS:
It was not hard for Jaine to open up to us about her personal journey in art and her creative process. By listening to her speak it is very easy to recognize the immense passion and dedication she has for her craft. So we decided to challenge her by asking to describe what she is as a creator in only three words. To our surprise her answer was very simple,
“Be awesome daily”, she says boldly, “that’s it”.
She cleverly explains to anyone that has a goal, vision, or a talent they want to pursue that the best way to get better is by being the best you can on a regular basis. Continue to challenge yourself and seek what ever makes you personally happy so that you can always display the best version of yourself and your craft.
