Senhora Alice gets down on a knee to hold him by the shoulders, and the scene of blood and contorted limbs is replaced by her wide, crooked smile.
“Never mind them, Jonas.” She says it in an elated whisper, like it’s a wonderful secret just for the two of them. “They don’t matter. They weren’t meant for you. They were tainted, impure.”
They weren’t meant for you… Impure… Something clicks in Jonas’ head. His ‘foster parents’ may have chosen him, but he did not choose them. “They were unworthy,” Jonas states.
Senhora Alice beams. “Exactly! Oh, Jonas, they didn’t understand…”
She brings her warm, red-stained hands to cradle his face. Her eyes capture his like magnets, and she gives words to something that he has always felt but could never name.
“...You are meant for a purpose that is so much more than this.”
Or, in a universe where Eugênio doesn't exist, Jonas seeks to be worthy of the purpose his Master—a strange woman named Alice—has promised him. What that "purpose" is, he doesn't know quite yet, but he loves his Mãe! He chose her! He trusts her!
