Summary:

They’re…gentle with Jasper. They run their fingers through his hair, whisper molasses-dark sweetness in his ear, press soothing kisses over the bites they dot on his neck. He doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t understand how. He knows love hurts, both giving and receiving, and nowhere is that more true than with Remi and Maria.

Love hurts. It has to hurt. If it doesn’t hurt now, it will hurt later. It’s only a matter of time.

It’s agony—days, weeks spent bracing for the blow to finally land. Sometimes, Maria’s smile turns sharp and Jasper tenses, this is it. Other times, Remi clenches his fists and Jasper braces, this is it.

But it never is. Maria’s smile smooths out, Remi releases his fists, and Jasper is left feeling so suddenly bereft that it almost makes him nauseous.

Or, there is something wrong in Jasper's relationship with Remi and Maria: It doesn't hurt.

(OR, Jasper has an ingrained association between love and pain. When his partners don't hurt him, well—he is confused, and eventually, distressed. This leads him to making some questionable choices.)

i have some theories regarding how the "in love" effect has been affecting the killers and before i elaborate i need y'all to keep three things in mind:

1st) the ritual the "in love" effect is based on, "capturar o coração", describes it as an obsession and a compulsory need to please at all costs, even if it goes against friends;

2nd) every time characters get the "in love" effect, they gain PD/PV;

3rd) despite the "in love" effect being cast by the hexatombe itself rather than a person, an occultist can use it to their advantage (unclear if they need to be the "loved one" or if an non-occultist could do the same).

when labirinto and jae slept with escarlata, they both gained the "in love" effect towards her, but also gained PD/PV from each other. on the other hand, when aguiar and jae slept with escarlata, they both gained the "in love" effect towards her, but did not gain PD/PV from each other.

this implies that labirinto and jae are "in love", but aguiar and jae are not.

(yes, this also implies that jae wants aguiar included for the love of the game, but they have been flirting with anyone they find hot — dani, kemi, eloy, ana, escarlata, caio — regardless of relationship status — kemi & eloy, ana & escarlata, caio & cindy — so that's not really surprising.)

now, here's the thing: when kemi kissed eloy, cellbit said that she was now "in love" with him, and said nothing about eloy being "in love" with her. same thing happened when labirinto, jae and aguiar got involved with escarlata.

why is that important? because 1) cellbit, as a DM, never says or doesn't say things for no reason (and if he forgets, he mentions it as soon as possible); 2) escarlata had no problem ordering jae and labirinto to kill aguiar, while jae and labirinto did very much struggle to go against her; and 3) escarlata did not have jae and labirinto go against each other, so we are not sure if they would have struggled.

(before anyone asks, i checked the ordem updates account and escarlata ordered labirinto to use the ritual on jae, but labirinto ran to use it on aguiar. on this, either calígrafo misunderstood it and cellbit didn't notice/rolled with it, or the ordem account noted wrong. after that, jae only went against labirinto once he killed escarlata, meaning it was not an order, but it can be argued that jae was not only taken by the emotions of seeing escarlata getting killed, they were also much more affected by escarlata than by labirinto — which i'll explain in a bit.)

my theory is that the person who initiates the action (be it a kiss or sex) is the one who falls "in love". which would kind of solve some consent issues this effect brings as well as make sense in a hand-wavy way if you consider "a person who is in love takes the initiative, so if they took the initiative, they must be in love".

this does make me worry a bit about kemi, however: 1) after the battle, eloy kissed kemi first, which would make it that he is also "in love" with her (and we know by the whole couraças dynamic that npcs are not immune to it); and 2) eloy got sad when kemi tried to make a joke that she wouldn't fall in love with eloy before she could clarify that it was because she already was (which i admit could also just be because he's a himbo).

but kemi and eloy aside, how is all of this affecting the relationships in-between the killers?

remember how i said being "in love" brings a compulsory need to please? labirinto has been the only one able to calm jae's bruised ego, while any words from the others only fuel their fire (as it had been since the beginning).

remember how i said being "in love" is described as an obsession? not only is labirinto becoming more and more fixated with jae and kissing them more and more often (even in very inappropriate moments, including right beside the deceased body of their team member, to the point where cellbit had to intervene through an npc), when labirinto narrated how he broke from the "love" for escarlata, he talked big about the team being family and the moments of connection they had and added very specifically "specially with jae".

we don't know if the "in love" effect is stack-able, but jae was much more affected by escarlata than labirinto and aguiar, and they had slept with her twice. if it is indeed stack-able and my theory is correct (meaning, the person who initiates the kiss/sex is the one to gain the "in love" effect), that would explain why labirinto is more and more obsessed with jae. and if so, the kisses during inappropriate moments could be calígrafo trying to sinalize that there is something going on with labirinto in an increasingly less subtle way than how he tried to bring attention to labirinto repeatedly staring at his own arm. perhaps it could even get to the level of obsession the couraças had with escarlata.

using the rose tinted lenses of shipping or not, this does affect the team's relationship, and henri and kemi are very much confused about what is going on.

labirinto and jae were grouped some times, but their most emotional moment before sleeping with escarlata (and each other) was running away from the quibungo and jae refusing to leave labirinto behind. before that, it was mostly making plans and strategizing together.

and yes, running for their lives together and refusing to leave each other behind would bring them to at least look at each other differently (similarly to how henri and aguiar formed their bond), regardless of what exactly this "new view" would be. but i don't personally believe that alone would bring it to where this has been going and certainly not this fast without prior connections (specially not with the elephant in the room).

even if disregarding any romance on labirinto and aguiar's connection, it is undeniable that there is, or was, a connection between them that had been growing steadily since the very first moment their eyes met. and even if jae keeps trying to bring aguiar into what has been going on between them and labirinto, there is no denying that some moments have a vibe of "trio composed by a pair and an extra" (aguiar being the extra, if it wasn't clear).

based on aguiar's facial expressions on said moments, had labirinto said the "specially with jae" part out loud, i would not have been surprised if hurt started brewing up. and now that dalmo is gone, he who was the one to break the ice every time tensions got too high, i wonder how they'll deal with this.
