Kate Bishop and Lucky the Pizza Dog in Hawkeye, Jonathan Igla, 2021
Since the MCU is such a big, sprawling franchise, there’s inevitably going to be differences in how a character is handled when moving directors. For example, Whedon’s Hawkeye is this stern special forces guy who just wanted to retire while Igla’s Hawkeye is this tired, messy dad who is really caring but burnt out from years of fighting. Same character, but different dimensions due to the change in teams.
All this to say that I love how at the end of “Endgame”, it was set up that Thor and Peter Quill were frenemies, with both of them wanting to be the leader of the Guardians. But in “Thor Love and Thunder”, Taika saw the rivalry and decided that there’s some unresolved tension there.
Or, in Peter Quill’s own words, “the unspoken thing”.

It requires a lot more physical force to draw an arrow than it does to pull a trigger. I liked the idea that, to me, Clint was somebody who felt the weight of what he was doing. It’s much more like throwing a punch, and that imbued his actions with consequences that he wanted to be aware of. Also it requires an extra millisecond of consideration and hesitation to draw an arrow and aim than it does to aim a gun and pull a trigger. I think that extra millisecond to consider whether this is a shot worth taking was a part of who I thought he was.

This most recent MCU series entry is just a lot of plain fun both enjoyed inside and outside Marvel’s existing cinematic cannon. [Jeremy] Renner relishes fleshing out his overlooked Avenger character as a worn-down Hawkeye with a fraught history and baggage in contrast to [Hailee] Steinfeld’s winning zeal and enthusiasm as a budding Young Avenger just starting out.
