MCU phases 4 and 5 in order of release, rated by importance so everyone is up to date on what to care about. 14 top tier projects, 10 at least worth the ticket fare, 7 mostly unpopular but not bad per se, and 4 absolute disasters out of a total 35 shows and movies.

This is not the massive failure of the genre everyone has been proclaiming is the death of the MCU. This is a ⅓ failure rate at most, and of that third, the reasons for failure are extremely obvious and widely known: massive last minute reshoots, military intervention of the script, production trying to work through COVID and barely managing it, and a bizarre 3 hour long abortion metaphor widely out of tone and extremely dull to watch. The success rate is high compared to, say, Sony or Universal. So how is it dying again?

So what's the point in labeling them as phases if they serve no structural purpose anymore? Phases 1-3 served a storytelling purpose. Phase One introduces characters and builds to Avengers (2012) while also setting up things to build off of for the next phase. Phase Two further established relationships between the characters and continued their personal arcs and introduces some of the conflicts with their ideologies and also brings in a few ome new characters and eventually led to Age of Ultron. Phase 3 starts by having their ideological conflics come to a head and the Avengers break immediately and the rest of the Phase separates the audience from those characters so that we feel the impact of Infinity War & Endgame when they finally come back together. Phases 4 and 5 didn't build to anything they just...end. There was no satisfying ending to an arc in Phase 4, it was just Wakanda Forever. Phase 5 did have an "Avengers" movie as the finale but it didn't include any of the characters we followed during that phase. As much as I really liked Thunderbolts* it wasn't a culmination of a phase, it was just a good movie.
