After 13 years I can say I've finally seen The Drums live! ☺️ It was so cool to finally see a band that has been one of my favourites since I heard "Let's Go Surfing" in 2010. I would take a bullet to protect the vibes of Jonathan Pierce any day ✨. Here's me, some raccoons that slept against the hotel window while hiding from the rain, and some yummy dinner shots!

When I think of The Drums, my initial thoughts bring me back to 2011, when I first fell for the band’s indie pop and surf rock ahead of their sophomore album Portamento, still my favorite record from them today. I also break out in smiles as I remember my first experience catching them live, watching in mesmeric adoration as Jonathan Pierce pranced about the Great American Music Hall stage in pinstripe pants with his signature motions and moves. In the years since, I’ve seen The Drums countless more times and journeyed with them through the more experimental and psychedelic sounds of some of their subsequent albums, like on Encylopedia. On April 5th, The Drums will bring us a new collection of songs named Brutalism, their fifth LP, co-produced by Pierce. As someone who’s quite fond of brutalist design and architecture (despite how cold and calculated they can be), I find my curiosity extra piqued by the album’s title. The album’s first single Body Chemistry is calculated, but fortunately not at all cold. With guitars that border on math rock obliqueness, and Pierce’s warm, sallow cooing, Body Chemistry reels us back into The Drums’ post-punk speckled surf pop atmosphere. “For the year prior to writing this song, I had been dealing with an increased feeling of depression. To counter that, I was doing all I could do to try and make myself feel good: implementing all sorts of self-care, going to therapy, eating well, exercising at the gym, taking a step back from partying, and focusing on positive relationships while weeding out the not-so-good ones” explains Pierce. “I still found myself weighed down with anxiety and depression. This song asks the question: Is this dull, sad feeling in my DNA? Is it part of my gene pool? Can it ever be corrected? I had been confronting some of my most stubborn demons, and I came to realize that confronting doesn’t always mean conquering.” As we take a new album journey with The Drums, I look forward to finding out more behind the choice of title for the record. Perhaps it’s rooted in its themes, or perhaps it’s related to its structure. Either way, it’s going to be another great year for The Drums fans. Pre-order Brutalism, here.
