A defence filed by broadcaster Alan Jones in his defamation battle with former NSW deputy premier Andrew Stoner contains "scandalous" and "irrelevant" material and should be kept confidential, the Supreme Court has heard.
Mr Stoner, who was leader of the NSW Nationals until he quit in October, has sued Mr Jones and Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham over a series of broadcasts on radio 2GB in June and August last year.
Mr Stoner’s barrister, Terence Tobin, QC, told the court on Friday that parts of the defence filed by Mr Jones and Mr Buckingham should be struck out or kept confidential under a court rule dealing with material which is "scandalous, frivolous, vexatious, irrelevant or oppressive".

Justice Lucy McCallum will decide next week whether the material should be kept secret.
"The court policy is to give access to pleadings," she told Mr Stoner’s lawyers on Friday.
The broadcasts at the centre of the court battle were critical of Mr Stoner’s actions in relation to contentious coal seam gas and coal mining projects.
In his statement of claim, Mr Stoner says the broadcasts implied Mr Stoner was not fit to be NSW Nationals leader or deputy premier and that he favoured miners over the welfare of the community.
He claims Mr Buckingham imputed that Mr Stoner "acted corruptly in promoting the coal interests of Nathan Tinkler as a payoff for donations to the [National] party".
He also claims Jones imputed he was a "stupid, weak and gutless person" who gave preferential treatment to mining and resources companies over his farming constituency, and "betrayed the farmers" by assisting Chinese coal company Shenhua to "destroy the farmlands of the Namoi Valley in pursuit of greedy profits".
Mr Stoner is seeking aggravated damages on the grounds Jones knew the imputations were false or that he was recklessly indifferent through "excessive language and sensationalism" used by the broadcaster.
The failure to provide Mr Stoner with an opportunity to respond and the failure to apologise would also support an award of aggravated damages, his lawyers say.
The parties return to court on Thursday.
