This is a really quick piece I did for my sister, @booksrgood4u for her birthday. It's from the prompt, "Happy Birthday" (I know, very creative!). A drabble of Nico getting her first taste of a birthday celebration.

For @mander-lee - thanks for the prompt!! ****** It had all been a misunderstanding, of course, and he liked to think that he and Nico were square now since Adela was out of the picture. He'd like to think that she understood. Even so, he could still see the look of betrayal on her face when he closed his eyes, her lips mouthing the word 'wife' and looking as though she'd just been stabbed. He felt like maybe he should bring it up, but a part him said to just leave well enough alone - after all, it was only a misunderstanding, but..."Nico?" They were standing on the docks, waiting for the ship that would ferry them to the mainland on there way to Zarin to iron out the matter of Den's bounty. "Hmm?" She was staring, transfixed, at the shifting waves. Josef felt almost relieved that she didn't look at him, he wasn't used to having these types of conversations, even with Nico, with whom conversation came easier than with anyone else. "I know there was a better way to handle all this, but I don't know what that way was. Anyway it's done now." She turned to face him now, her eyebrows lifted, questioning. It was his turn to stare out at the waves. "I never meant to hurt you." He looked back at her, wanting to make sure she understood. They'd never misunderstood each other before, and he'd taken it for granted. He wouldn't do that again. Wouldn't risk losing her again because of his own inability or unwillingness to communicate. A small smile tugged at her lips. "I know," was all she said. She turned to watch the waves with him. Josef watched her for a moment longer, getting the distinct impression that she did understand him after all. She understood him in a way no one cared to understand before. Another thing he'd never take for granted again.
