social media has left us to believe that self care means putting on a face mask and some expensive lotion and binge watching a random tv show. and while that can be very self soothing and I won't deny it's effects, I would like to give my perspective on some other things I consider to be self care. the things social media doesn't talk about enough in my opinion:
crying your eyes out, when all feels too much and you're so overwhelmed you need to literally let it all out
picking yourself back up again after failure, loss, hard times in general etc.
taking a shower on those days where you really don't feel like it
lighting a candle or placing some old fairy lights in your room to have a little bit of light on darker days
taking the time to pick out an outfit for yourself or generally wearing something you feel comfortable and cozy in
journaling out your thoughts so they don't weigh too heavy in your mind
seeking help in form of a therapist, groups etc.
cleaning your space, especially after you couldn't do it for a while because you didn't have the energy for it
accepting the fact that you can't do anything today other than just existing and breathing (and if you've been there you know how hard it can be to accept that without feeling ashamed or like a failure)
the list can go on forever but what I wanna say is: it's okay to not be okay, it's okay to seek help, you're not alone, you're doing your best and that's enough and if no one told you today: I'm proud of you, you got this.
