PREMIERE: Joseph Luca Breaks Hearts and Backs In His New Sensual Music Video “Break My Back”
Joseph Luca breaks hearts and backs in the new video for his sensual single, “Break My Back.” This daring anthem has the catchiness of some of pop’s biggest hits; some might mistake Luca’s voice for Charlie Puth or Troye Sivan. His song is alluring and taunting, peeling at our core sexual desires. It was written from a personal experience, as Luca shared,
"Break My Back” is a song about building trust with your romantic partner while embracing both sides of the spectrum of submission and dominance. It's about going that extra mile in the bedroom and letting go of all control. It's a song I wrote after I did indeed break my back. And from that I learned how to turn something negative that happened into a positive."
The video, shot in Los Angeles and directed by Mike Dones, is racy without being distasteful, depicting a dancer, Tia Rivera, wearing a black bra and underwear with a sheer bodysuit. We are in the front seat of Luca’s sexual fantasy, or possibly the beginning of a Beyoncé music video. Luca is Rivera’s submissive, and stands there as if his back is actually broken, peeling back his desires and aggressions to change up the way that he views sex and his masculinity. Rivera dances for him passionately and grinds on him as he looks at her like she’s his Beyoncé and he’s JT. Both Rivera and Luca are blurred and every movement spurts rainbow colors, as the background is black and white.
Luca commented on this video,
"It's always a little terrifying at first to bring your fantasy to life and show it to the world. But there is something in that fear that tells you exactly what you need to do. I wanted to make a video that was liberating for me and empowering for others. If you can get past gender roles with a lover, there is a whole new reality to explore that is mutually beneficial for both partners. All it took was a little magic from the incredible Tia Rivera and Mike Dones to bring this fantasy to life."
Luca was born in the small town of Ojai, CA. When his parents split, he found music. A CalArts graduate, he mastered the arts of becoming guitarist, bassist, writer, and vocalist. He started to create music and explore the fragility that makes us human -- especially applying it to men who feel that they have to always be tenacious. He said,
“My music touches onto something a lot of men are afraid to tap into. Men are commonly not in tune with the feminine side of themselves that exists whether they like it or not. I’m here to redefine everything a man can be and music is my weapon of choice."
Luca turns his sexual fantasies and conditions into pure poetry and beauty on screen in the “Break My Break” video.
