Tamil Nadu Farmers Threaten Statewide Hunger Strike Over Alleged TVK Loan Waiver U-Turn

Farmers in Tamil Nadu have launched a protest against the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, accusing the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of failing to fulfill its election promise on crop loan waivers.

Farmer leader P. R. Pandian announced that if the government does not address their demands, farmers across the state will observe a hunger strike on June 30. Farmer groups claim that TVK had promised complete loan waivers for farmers owning less than five acres and partial relief for larger landholders during the election campaign.

However, the government's revised policy reportedly limits full loan waivers to small and marginal farmers with agricultural loans of up to ₹75,000, prompting allegations of betrayal and broken promises.

As tensions rise, the issue is emerging as the first major challenge for the Vijay-led government, with upcoming negotiations likely to determine the course of the agitation.
