Le général Joubert reprend le plateau de Rivoli (14 Janvier 1797 - 25 Nivôse An V)
Painting by Auguste Debay, 1835, musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon.
An enemy column, which had marched along the Adige River under the protection of powerful artillery, headed straight for the Rivoli plateau to capture it, thereby threatening to outflank Bonaparte's right and center. To resist, he ordered various cavalry maneuvers. At the same moment, General Joubert brought down several battalions from the heights of San Marco, which plunged into the Rivoli plateau, and, rifle in hand, like a simple grenadier, he himself charged at the head of a platoon. The enemy, who had already penetrated the plateau, attacked fiercely from all sides, leaving a large number of dead, part of their artillery, and retreated into the Adige valley.
