GENDER ↠ CIS WOMAN AGE ↠ 25 FANDOM ↠ ROOM (2015) FILM & NOVEL BY EMMA DONAGHUE
Joy and her young son Jack have just moved into an independent living facility, “for people who need a little bit of help.” They’ve been dubbed heroes, angels, bonsais, and turned into overnight celebrities for one very big reason: Joy was abducted on her way home from school when she was 17 years old, and imprisoned in a renovated & soundproofed shed for seven years. Her beloved son, Jack, was born in that small room and raised there for 5 years, unaware that there was a whole real world waiting for him just through the secure code-locked door. For lack of human interaction he became friends with his possessions, Bed and Rocker and Lamp and Blanket and Rug. The only person he ever knew was his Ma, and the ever-hovering threat of the captor from whom Joy sheltered him.
But now they’re free, in a place Jack calls Outside. To Jack it’s like another planet. To Joy, it’s an overwhelming place full of too many reminders of what happened to her as a teenager. She can’t stand going to the zoo for the cages, freezes up from terror in the elevator, has become obsessed with imprisonment and solitary confinement rates around the world, can’t let go of her experience with both hands. But Jack’s holding the other, so maybe it’ll be okay after all.
They’ve made a list of things they want to try now that they’re in Outside. School for Jack, college for Joy. A house of their own. A car. Living in another country. Going on play dates. Getting a dog and naming him Lucky. Moving on. It’s a slow climb, and not always steady, but they’re trying their best.
