AU-inspired song belonging to the hijack fic Dress us in Blue and Silver:
Oh, Winterson,
son of a mother that forgot how to take care of you.
The world became your womb and you've become your master.
You've been playing around for a long time,
I wonder if you get tired, but I can't see your eyes.
Love all that you are, for who you are is all that there is.
And one day (when I'm gone, The Wind will call my name and the Myst will own it.
Winterson, I call you home, best don't run away.
I'll take your word (for its all we've got).
Winterson is an incomplete, rough around the edges song from the perspective of Joyace Bennett, human mother of two (Sophie and Jamie), who has recently become interwined with the fae and the Other and ultimately became Jack Frost's Guardian in the process (to everyone's surprise, most of all hers). Still, there's a lot that she can't understand about Jack, which is made worse by the barriers that make it impossible to reach out to him as she'd like, and there's grieving in that.
The song makes more sense within the context of the story; a woman looking through the looking glass at a 300yr old spirit she's learned to care about and love as her own, but is still being kept at a distance neither of them can help or do anything about, expect what they are able.
'Love all that you are, for who you are is all that there is.
And one day (when I'm gone, The Wind will call my name and the Myst will own it.'
These bits of the song are about how Jack barely has any presence in the world, how Jack exists in isolation, and how they both know that one day she will die, and his presence will mean a little less than it already did when he goes back to being alone, as he expects. Joyace has to make sure he loves himself enough to exist in a world where his presence might as well mean nothing at all.
'Winterson, I call you home, best don't run away.
I'll take your word (for its all we've got).'
Yet for now, she's here, her kids are here, Jack is here. He has a home. They are a home. And she needs Jack to believe this, so that he can back when he needs to. She trusts that he will. Its all she has.
