so the jp is the same as the en, save for the "shell out" part. that's where fun translation stuff comes into play (that an AI could never replace, I think...)!

the reason I paused at all was because the japanese doesn't say anything about turtles! I'm pretty sure it's coming from the 監視カメラ part, which is a surveillance camera (translated as "security camera" here). I think it's a pun of sorts: the word for "turtle" in japanese is カメ, kame, which is also the first two letters of カメラ, kamera, so presumably yuru didn't really understand the "security," 監視, part of the equation, and...oh, or more likely, since he's unfamiliar with cameras, he probably took the kame from that!

anyway so this doesn't work in english at all, of course...so they had to find a way to shoe-horn in some joke about turtles, haha. i think this was a super clever way to do it!

the word they have translated as "conventional train" is "在来線" which is one I had to look up

but the reason I paused at all was because...the fuck is a "conventional train"???? have you ever heard that word used before??? because i sure as hell haven't

i immediately assumed it was just a local line, but I'm pretty sure there's another word for that in jp (after a brief search: yes, there are a few ways to say this: it's usually 各駅停車, which more specifically denotes a train that makes a stop at every station (((this literally translates to "every station stop train"))), and also 普通列車, which translates to something like "ordinary train" which is just denoting that it's not an express or limited line or anything)

either way...it seems like a better tl here would still be something like "local line" bc i've never heard "conventional line" used haha

en: character 1: well, we're also in a situation where we would even be happy to have the help of a cat!

character 2: he's a stray cat after all

so in japanese, there is a saying: 猫の手も借りたい. this literally translates to "(we) would even borrow the paw of a cat". in daily usage it means more like: extremely busy; so busy one would even welcome the help of a cat (borrowed from here)

so he says this saying that directly references needing a cat's help, and pink haired responds with "well he is a stray cat!"

but in english it seems like he's just mentioning it out of the blue...

it's a tricky situation, because in en we do not have a saying like that, so it might sound like a stilted thing to say. but in this case for the sake of the following line i think it might be worthwhile to keep the more literal side of the jp line!

jp: -まずはこの鉄をようかい(?not sure if it was "youkai" or "yokai", but either way i don't know what it means lol)させる。

I'm not going to try to translate the first line since I'm missing a key word in it lol but it's cute how they got around the pun here. In Japanese, she's mishearing "tetsu", iron, for "ketsu", which is butt. They kept the "butt" but because "iron" and "butt" don't sound anything alike in en, they made him say "broth" instead!

what momo uses for "mad respect" is actually the word "respect" in english with jp structure around it. when granny says "speak properly" she isn't actually saying that; she's saying 日本語しゃべれよくそだろう, which is more or less "speak japanese, you bastard" (or any variation thereof of "bastard"). she's SPECIFICALLY calling out her english usage. and she continues to do so in the following lines: she isn't saying "i really hate those words", she says "I hate English."

but most importantly, the REASON this sub kinda tries its best and fails is because it misses the punchline: she EXPLICITLY says "son of a bitch" IN ENGLISH. that's the joke...and by not translating it it kind of falls flat, I feel?

I have no idea what I’m doing, I downloaded video editing software with no knowledge of how anything works and spat this out in under an hour. Sorry the subtitles don’t look great, sorry it’s not 100% accurate to the Japanese, sorry for the stupid watermark that I only found out would be there AFTER I WENT THROUGH ALL THIS TROUBLE…but whatever, here, I don’t wanna look at this anymore, take it.
