Five years ago, I met and photographed J.P. Patches, aka Chris Wedes, for an insurance company's ad campaign. I did not grow up here in Seattle, so I have to claim some level of ignorance on the whole J.P Patches phenomenon. I grew up in San Diego, so for me it was Ozzy Smith and Shamu. Yes, the whale.
But the moment I told people I was going to photograph J.P. Patches, long-time locals' eyes always lit up and they'd quickly tell me their own personal story of how this TV clown was as special to them as any pet or favorite blanket. It was universal.
The day of our photo shoot, Chris couldn't find the entrance to the studio. He'd called the producer and asked which door was the right one. (We were in Georgetown and there were a lot of doors...) I offered to go outside and find him. I exited the building to find J.P.—in FULL costume—walking up and down the sidewalk trying every door to the building, laughing, smiling and pantomiming when he picked the wrong one and surprised the occupants. I guess I expected him to change into the costume when he got to the studio. Then I realized that this was no costume. This is just who he is.
He was Julius Pierpont Patches, not just Chris Wedes in costume.
Affable, soft-spoken and very aware of his importance to so many grown-up children of Seattle, he was an absolute pleasure to be around. Probably the best celebrity I ever shot. And though I don't have the encoded childhood memories so many of my friends do, I now have some from the short time I spent with him that are nearly as strong.
Farewell J.P., Seattle will be a little grayer without you.
