Im dying in bed rn @ghost-proofbaby
It's easy to see how lossing 4 rounds in a row would take a hit on your pride, compared if you've won 3 and lost 1. You'd have an entirely different frame of reference for the entire match. The would-be winner could look and see things more for what they are.
If you're the guy who lost it all, you might just see it as 4 times you were defeated. You might not gaf, you might remember you were taken down 4 times. You're not afraid to fall again.
But if you won 3 times. It's easy to see the absence of fault, someone's gotta loose and it's hard when you're at the start and being matched with the to-be winner. Fundamentally the people competing are at different skill levels. From different schools with different techniques and students with different aptitudes. At the same time someone's gonna lose 4 times, someone's gonna win 4 times. And that may be an honest reflection of their skill level. Maybe they just got lucky in the match making. Maybe a combination of both.
To practice ju jitsu on a regular basis, it becomes a part of your identity. You decided to compete, because you're good at ju jitsu. That's who you are. You gave it your all, because this is a recognised measure of competence. You're not the best, but in white belts, you're competitive. You're a weapon compared to a normal man. To have that notion of self be contradicted by loosing 4 times. It would take a hit to your ego/pride. You might have imagined this exact same worst case scenario a hundred times. Making it all the more significant.
Interesting how you wouldn't see those 4 losses the same as someone with 3 wins and 1 loss. both of you, would have had good matches, that really tested your abilities. You'd both have a lot to reflect on.
But the looser couldn't see the learning opportunity (from his vantage point). Not as easily as the one who finished with 3 wins. At the same time the looser might actually see what it is. Genuinely not be blinded by emotion, just brush that off and reflect on the matches. Like a lawyer might read court statements. And the guy who finished with 3 wins and 1 loss might just be thinking. "only if I didn't loose to that guy" and couldn't even imagine loosing more rounds.

Sapersi difendere.
