So, I met this cool woman, who migrated to croatia from Ukraine two years ago, because her home town got destroyed. She's living here with her daughter, and she told me she was going to stay, even when the war is over, because she doesn't want her kid to be facing the period of war restoration in Ukraine, and there's no home to come back to anyway; she lived in Kiev. She works as a translator, and I've had the most lovely time discussing language, politics and feminism with her. She is incredibly smart and passionate about her work!
We started taking short walks together, to walk her dog, because we can easily communicate; most croatians don't speak english, but I'm good at it, and happy to have someone I can chat to in the english language. That's enrichment to me! I'm glad to have a friend to talk to in real life, I rarely communicate outside of the internet.
So why am I writing this. It's because there's an inner conflict inside of me about her. I admire her and think what she's doing is amazing, she's a member of 'Translators without borders', and every two weeks she will translate an article for free, just to help spread information from the world to her country. She actually started freelancing as a translator from home when she was on maternal leave, and she turned it into her full time job in the matter of months, something I didn't know was possible to do in that timeframe. She's raising her kid alone, she's decisive, confident, and likes listening to me talk about nature and herbal medicine.
But! She uses chatgpt and likes it as a translating tool! She told me she was within the group of translators who were paid to help train it. Every now and then when I ask her something she'll go 'ask chatgpt' and I'm immediately crying and sobbing and throwing a tantrum (exaggeration). I asked her yesterday if she thought wikipedia was a reliable source of information and she said 'you can go to chatgpt instead' and I felt physical pain.
What do you think? Is this a detail that I should overlook?
Is the Ukrainian woman valid?
We love her, ignore it, she's a war refugee, this doesn't matter
We cannot be friends with chatgpt users
no nuance pick one
