Bryce has been nursing the same glass of alcohol-free champagne for the entire night with no interest in actually drinking it. He doesn’t know if anyone has noticed, but he feels eyes on him constantly, someone is always looking. It’s good. It makes him feel confident while mingling with everyone at the all-star game's after party. The latest pair of older gentlemen have left him leaning against a table when he catches movement to his left.

“Enjoying yourself?” A voice asks and Bryce recognizes it as Aaron and grins to himself.

“Yeah.”

“I don’t know how you do it,” Aaron says and Bryce turns his head to look up at him. Studies his expression how the side of his jaw tenses and relaxes while he looks at the crowd in front of them. His eyes dart to Bryce and when he sees Bryce looking, away again. He bites his lips together.

“Give me a theory,” Bryce prompts. Aaron licks his lips and takes a sip from the glass he’s holding.

“You’re…” Aaron starts and then pauses for a moment. Bryce keeps looking at him. “You know everyone here wants to be you or be under you.”

“Yeah?” He asks. It’s the best read anyone’s ever managed. It’s definitely not wrong.

“You hold all the power over them and you find that fun.”

“So which group are you?” Bryce asks and Aaron looks at him, eyes wide.

“Huh?”

“Be me…” He looks Aaron up and down, pushing himself upright and steps towards Aaron. “Or under me?”

Time in the in-season rentals is expiring, like their season did in Los Angeles. The orange sunset halos Bryson’s hair. He guards the flame from the wind as he lights the second blunt they’re about to share.

“You better miss me while we’re apart,” Bryson says and blows a puff of smoke into the air.

“I’m not promising you that,” Trea says and Bryson rolls his eyes.

He will miss Bryson. Of course he will. He’s afraid everything will be different though. None of this would’ve happened if he didn’t miss the window on getting a place to stay during spring training and had to beg Bryson for a bed. It changed everything. And he’s been avoiding thinking about the looming off season.

“I’ll text you all the time.”

“Okay.”

Kristen says she can always tell when Bryson texts him. Or he sees Bryson. Or he hears Bryson. She says he lights up the same way he does with her. She’s never asked about it. Trea doesn’t know what he would say. It’s usually frowned upon to tell you’re wife you’re in love with someone else, although it’s not like he’s not in love with her too.

“And you’ll text me back?” Bryson asks.

“Guess we’ll see,” Trea offers. He’s always been much worse at this than Bryson. Being vulnerable. Being honest.
