HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GENE
the way he looks at Judy 😍
For Me and My Gal . The Pirate . Summer Stock
This scene is just a little piece of happiness, isn't it? It's so fun, and sweet, and it really is a sentimental favorite of mine. 🥰 Unfortunately, Judy was really struggling with health issues during the filming of this movie, which resulted in many delays. By all accounts, however, Gene provided nothing but love and patient support to her during this difficult time. He's quoted as saying...“We loved her and we understood what she was going through, and I had every reason to be grateful for all the help she had given me.” It really does seem, that this movie is Gene's love-letter to her, and I think you can see it in his performance. 🤍 Despite all the difficulties, it's such a joyful and touching film, filled with happy moments like this one. I think that's a testament to Judy's incredible talent, as well as that of everyone involved. 🤍 Judy Garland & Gene Kelly, in "Summer Stock" (1950). 💕

We hope you will enjoy this episode 😊
I'm leery about opening any new platform on my PC. I looked for the Summer Stock commentary on YouTube but it's not there. When time permits, could you please summarize?
I think all of us Jugenea fans would agree with Dick Dinman as he reviewed the Summer Stock Blu-ray with John Fricke for WMPG:
“If you look at Kelly’s acting in this film, it is extremely low-keyed, sensitive…in a way that I’m frankly not used to seeing in his acting performances. My theory on that…Chuck Walters contributed to that…but I think Kelly was so respectful of Judy Garland’s talents and really I think he really loved her to the point, I’m beginning to wonder whether… maybe early on when they were doing “For Me and My Gal,” Kelly’s first film, maybe they had a little flirtation.”
“But I just think his performance, without forgetting his incredible choreography, and dancing. But as an actor in this I now understand why Billy Wilder was considering Kelly for Sunset Boulevard when Montgomery Clift dropped out…to me his performance in this is something different and special.”
As usual John steers the conversation away from the implication and I know us fans think there might’ve been more than just “a little flirtation.” But I do like the fact that their chemistry can be seen from regular reviewers not just rabid Jugenea fans🥰
