McFly July Day 4: Ice Cream Truck
Post-trilogy, Lone Pine timeline, in which Doc & fam have moved back to the "present day"
“All I’m saying is that we should have other choices.”
“Okay, so take it up with Dad. I’m sure he’d love to hear all your great ideas.”
Despite having barely emerged from the light sleep he’d been in, Marty could hear the sarcasm in the reply. He cracked his eyes open, finding the boys’ outlines in the dark tent.
An exaggerated huff sounded in the small space. “See what you’ve done, Verne? You woke Martin up.”
“Hey! I wasn’t the only one talkin’, ya know. And you could use some practice with whispering.”
“Both of you could use the practice,” Marty mumbled into his pillow. “What are you arguing about, anyway?”
Verne sat up quickly in his sleeping bag, evidently thrilled at the invitation to pull one more person into the conversation.
Marty yawned. “What about it?”
“It’s too stinkin’ big! Look what happens when we wanna go anywhere. We gotta go out to the middle of nowhere.”
“We’d have to do that regardless of the time machine’s size,” Jules pointed out. “The vehicle is less the problem than the fact said vehicle is appearing out of thin air.”
The rebuttal silenced Verne for long enough that Marty was halfway back to drifting off by the time he spoke again.
“Whatever. The point is, I got better ideas for other time machines.”
Jules snorted. “Like what?”
“A motorcycle. They’re awesome and much smaller.”
“And a guaranteed death sentence. I highly doubt a person would survive a trip through the space-time continuum all exposed like that.”
“Wrong! Dad built that time machine sled thing, remember? He survived.”
“Guys?” Marty lifted his head, propping himself up on his elbows. “Can we discuss this tomorrow?”
“Well, surely repeated trips wouldn’t be good for the human body,” Jules countered.
“Fine! Not a motorcycle, then, but it should still be cool. What about a convertible? Like a Mustang! You could put the top up when you time travel.”
Jules quietly considered this.
“Or wait, wait! Something fun. An ice cream truck! We could travel through time giving people Screwballs and strawberry shortcake bars.”
Marty let his head fall back to the pillow. Next time they went camping, he was getting his own tent.
