Mason Hewitt comes from a huge family, he’s the youngest of eleven kids. His mom and dad have really good well-paying jobs and also loads of time for their kids.
Malia protected Lydia during her night in the woods in s2. Just wrapped her little coyote self around this helpless human.
Harley, Scott and Stiles were a trio as a kids. And a really chaotic one that made loads of people crazy. Theo hovered at the edge of that trio for all of fourth grade.
Hunters do a lot of adopting/acquiring, especially for the men. The way Gerard is like: "I would kill my own son" and the way Chris looks at him has always made me think Chris was not really his son. I also think hunters foster their kids out and Chris spent some time being trained/raised by Araya and that's why they have a relationship before s4.

Lydia's powers manifested in many ways pre-canon. That's why her dad asks about her in the way he does in the s1 teacher conference. He's convinced its happening again, much like it happened with his mother. We also see her drawn to her grandmother's death in the flashback. Lydia is smart enough to learn early on that it's best *not* to be different and has been unconsciously suppressing her powers for ages before Peter forces them into the open.
