a very short VILE Op!Julia AU oneshot

“It was better, then!” Julia shouts. “We were happy, before you betrayed us.”

Black Sheep looks as if someone has punched her. “Julia—”

“My name is Quicksilver.”

“What VILE does is wrong, you know it is. The things they take belong to the people, to the cultures they come from. The money belongs to a charity, not to Cleo or Maelstrom’s bank account.” She stalks towards Julia so fast that her coat flares out behind her.

“I wasn’t talking about the stealing, Black Sheep.”

“My name is Carmen.”

“I was talking about us!” Julia’s voice cracks. “The three of us. We were your closest friends, and you betrayed us. Don’t you remember—”

“I remember everything, Quicksilver! I’m not the one whose memory was wiped! You say I betrayed you, but you know VILE betrayed him. You know that taking Grey’s memories was more of a betrayal than anything I could ever do.” They’re close, too close, now; Julia feels Black Sheep’s breath as her accusatory finger hovers near Julia’s chest.

Black Sheep’s voice drops. “At least… when I left… it was my choice. Grey never had any choice, and you know that’s wrong.”

“I know. But you…” Julia swallows. “You never gave me a choice, either.”

Black Sheep steps back. “You’re right. So, this time… can I give you a choice?”

Julia knows what question Black Sheep is about to ask her, and she realises that for the first time in seven years, she doesn’t know how she’s going to answer.

“Julia, come with me. Leave VILE, leave ACME, leave all of this. We can, we can go anywhere. You always wanted to see the world—really see it, not just travelling for work.”

And Julia thinks that maybe this isn't the way she wants to matter. She thinks that maybe when everything she's ever done--when VILE, ACME, the trail of thefts and destruction is reduced to ash and dust, it would be nice to have spent the time she had with someone she loved.

"Alright," she says

Carmen's grin is blinding.
