"Mack the Knife" (1989) - Menahem Golan

Brecht and Weill's "The Threepenny Opera" ("Die Dreigroschen Oper") set in 1830s London, against the backdrop of Queen Victoria's coronation.

A solid cast with a.o. Raul Julia, Richard Harris, Julie Walters and Bill Nighy, with Roger Daltry as a commentator/storyteller character.

Very well worth watching.

Mary Penelope’s concept outfits in full color! Which outfit is YOUR favorite? Reference pics below...

I keep imagining several outfits for Mary P., going for a whole white-blue nautical vibe. The idea was to make her white skirt look like a sail (see references). Yes I know the books kept mentioning her long skirt, but YOU KNOW she’s got a pair of sailing pants somewhere!

You’ll also note the changes from my earlier designs from 2010. I think Mary P. is at heart a free spirit who loves being on the go,  even when she becomes a mom. Being a mom doesn’t mean you should just lose your fun distinctive fashion sense–something lost on me as a teenager in 2010. So I went for loose flowy bottoms w/ flat shoes, for maximum comfort to go wherever she pleases.

I’m really working on redrawing these characters so that their looks match their personalities.

Nach der letzten Kannste-Was-Lernen!-Dreigroschenoper (hier) befand ich, wir hätten nun wirklich einmal wieder Mack The Knife verdient. Die Dreigroschenoper ist (möglicherweise neben La cage aux folles) die schlimmste Ansammlung zäher Ohrwürmer, die uns bekannt ist, und darf Spaß machen. Ich wiederhole mich etwas (wenn Sie sich nicht mehr erinnern: Vergleiche hier). Noch mehr Spaß, um es noch einmal in aller Deutlichkeit gesagt zu haben, würde es machen, wenn der Film auf fortschrittlicheren Medien als verottelnden Videokassetten zu bekommen wäre. Hallo?

One thing we forget about Michael Kamen is his vicinity to the New York scene and all the latter entails. Sure, his eclecticism can be explained this way, so his opus doesn't shock us then. Thus, we are not surprised he and Julia Migenes made a collaborative album, titled Smile. The latter contained the covers of many different pieces from a lot of movies, which she did on her own style, though I must admit they both could've been a bit more radical with the songs. Then again, a good counterpoint would be – why? She does follow the leads of those that have done these compositions before, while her other work in operas and musicals does present us with someone who seems to be interested in being a part of a tradition.
