DS9 Rewatch - S04 E04 - Hippocratic Oath
Child me watching in 1997: guys … I think heroin might be bad.
Adult me with literal decades of story work: Oh, I never noticed that the parallel of how insubordination is handled by Bashir vs Goran’Agar is almost a b-plot on its own merit, and the whole this is really presented without judgement or side-taking. That was quite tidy, actually. Well done Ms. Klink. Heroin still seems pretty bad. Substance abuse is treated very well in this series, come to think of it.
Actual, lil hat tip to Rene Aubejonois as a director on this one. Clarity was king on this one, and the reoccurring shots-for-themes was efficient. (Shots in order of appearance.)

GUESS WHAT I SPOTTED IN BABYLON 5 IN THIS WATCH (in a seedy alien or human bar in “whatever happened to mr. garibaldi?”
Rougier strikes again
Seems I missed it in Code of Honor. Did every alien culture in S1 have the wasp nest lamp?
They’re like a virus honestly, spot one and more show up

Yeah but why HASN'T someone written an unofficial DS9 musical? We're a talented bunch off assholes, someone out there has what it takes!
CAN YOU IMAGINE: 8 part Dax harmonies. desperately yearning garashir ballads. Bajoran chorals, with recitativa duels between Kira and Winn. theme mergings with Ziyal. Sisko's wildly rich voice talking about his grief->anger->long-suffering everything. jake and nog with a herpity derpity doo pickpocketing duet. some sort of sexually charged pink panther variation with quark and odo. little devotion ballad for miles and keiko. weyoun ACTUALLY calling damar his bitch. dukat trying to sing over everyone else all. the. time.
vic fontaine's program broke, he is not invited.
Friends: you want filk. Filk is what you’re looking for. Search up “ds9 filk” and have fun.
I am now offering goal rewards for this prompt.
For every original DS9 musical song that is posted here (or on AO3 on my prompt cue here) I will make an animatic to go with it!
To get an animatic:
1 - may not be a Weird Al style parody song.
2 - track must have vocals and instrumentation. doesn't need to be fancy or real instruments, just enough to give me something to work with!
3 - does not need to be new - if someone wants to retroactively submit their own preexisting filk, I will do that too!
Yes to all of the above!
I assure you: somebody, somewhere, is on the exact same wavelength as you are.
I really love that having Star Trek on their resumes allows these actors the fun and freedom to get up on a stage and do whatever the hell they’re going to enjoy the most and get paid and get applause.
Showbiz can be really hard, but this looks like everyone is having the best time of their lives.
DS9 Rewatch - S02 E09 Second Sight
I almost skipped this one because of my previously mentioned aversion to gaslight episodes. BUT there are 2 pretty cool things here.
This Benjamin shot:
It’s just really smooth, and in general DS9 is shot as kind of a jittery show. The shot is nice, but the contrast of shot type overall is a nice thing on its own. You also don’t often see an actor do a 360 in one shot on anything.
This trans Dax moment, which I really love. The idea of being trans was in the public eye in the 90s is not the way it is now at all. Then the terminology was limited to a t-word slur and ‘cross dressing/dresser’. It wasn’t understood in the way it is now - but on the other hand, it’s such a public point of contention that this kind of conversation might not have made it to air if it was contextualized the way it is now.
Anyway, baby queer me suuuuuure appreciated Jadzia. Oh boy, a person who could be a woman and a man? That sure makes a refreshing change from trying to force myself to GAF about Ross’s shitass on Friends.
how are you gonna be 31 and posting fandom content bro leave it to the teenagers
People 10 and 20 years older than me are writing your favorite fanfics, and drawing your favorite characters. You'd have no fandom without the people you think are 'too old' to have hobbies.
Who the heck do you think started modern day fandom with Star Trek? It sure wasn't teenagers.
Who do you think makes professional quality fanart and fanfic? People who've been practicing it for ten, fifteen, twenty years!
Or even people who've been practicing it for thirty, forty or fifty!!!!!
example: Diane Duane. Currently in her seventies. Star Trek fangirl since the original run. Goddess-level Ascended Fan who has created official tie-in works in more forms of media than pretty much anyone else alive, possibly even Rodenberry himself because they didn't have audiobooks or video games when he was with us. Writer of Spock's World, The Wounded Sky, Doctor's Orders in TOS. Co-writer of TNG script Where no one has gone before, and writer of the tie-in novel Dark Mirror among others. Writer of a half-dozen Star Trek Comics. She has adapted her own work for audio, has written for the Star Trek manga series, has written short Trek fiction for anthologies, and plotted and wrote the video game Star Trek: the Kobayashi Alternative.
In other fandoms, she was a personal friend of Terry Pratchett himself. As a scriptwriter, she's also worked in fandoms like Scooby-Doo, Transformers, My Little Pony, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, Spiderman: Unlimited (and a trilogy of tie-in novels still in print) and Barbie: Fairytopia. ...And that's just cherry-picking her imdb page.
While she can't give out specific details due to Obvious Reasons, she's still active in the Sherlock BBC fandom - and there's a specific subset of her fans who love guessing which of the legendary fanfics might be her work (I am not one of them, BTW, as it is None Of My Business. I'm old-school that way).
Fandom is not for teenagers. Fandom is for everyone of good heart and enthusiasm for a good (or even bad! No judgement!) story.
Just wait until you grow up, Anonymous OP. Wonder how long it'll take you to change your mind.
...Some days when you're feeling tired and sad, and wondering "what the hell is the point... why am I even bothering?"... it's nice to be reminded that you're supported.

Ahh, the genetic link between Hannibal and Deep Space 9 ...
I've been having a lot of feelings about Reg Shoe since finishing Night Watch and this moment from Reaper Man just was begging to be stitched.
There are some DS9 fans who really insist that The Big Bashir Retcon couldn’t have actually been a retcon, because it was so well-laid out in various hints prior to Doctor Bashir, I Presume?, and therefore must have always been intended.
Obviously, this isn’t true, and the folks who actually wrote that episode have explained how the retcon came about (they needed a second act twist and didn’t think about the implications). But as someone who worked on the earlier seasons of the show, with the usual assortment of inconsistencies that most shows of that era would have, episode to episode, do you have any thoughts on:
A) how well it does or doesn’t gel with things like Bashir’s ever-changing story of why he decided to become a doctor, or why he didn’t finish first in his class, or why he decided to seek a post on the “frontier” instead of somewhere more prestigious, and also
B) on how well the show incorporated Bashir’s unique status as an openly genetically engineered Starfleet officer going forward? (I think that all that was after your era and I would never encourage you to talk smack about your fellow writers, but I’m still curious about your thoughts as a writer if you have any you’d like to share.)
(Personally I think as a retcon, it works amazingly well with all of the said minor inconsistencies in Bashir’s appearances on the show, but it does seem like that was more of a happy byproduct than anything else—one of those glorious accidents writers sometimes trip and fall into without planning it.)
Yeah, totally a retcon. That said....
A) I think it fit pretty well. It gives a solid reason for him tanking his exam, motivates his profession, and explains his occasional arrogance, especially early on.
B) Can't really speak to that because, as you said, I wasn't on staff for Season 6 and 7.
(Addendum): I agree!
Something I appreciate about the characters of Garak and Spock is that they really demonstrate how you can be a grown ass 40-year-old man and still get just incredibly fucked up by something your dad says to you. Daddy issues aren't just for the 20 somethings!!
It is *impossible* to understate the money Los Angeles is willing to throw at stories by adult men about adult men with daddy issues.
assassin's quest was crazy omg.... them :' ) fated counterparts, my favourite.
Fitz(Chivalry)
You probably can't tell but I tried using a different brush for the rendering and I think I like it!! It gives a very nice painterly texture :D
