@justaditto and @juls-writes
and also a Worldbuilding Wednesday! If you could go anywhere in your wip for an afternoon, where would you spend the time and why?
Thanks for the ask! Slowly catching up this week. :) I'm not normally one for cities, but I'd love to visit Silveridge, the capital of my main country. It's so pretty and clean. There are plants everywhere, so many parks, the buildings are made from white stone with so much stained glass and bright colors as embellishments, it's warm and sunny, and it's full of art magic since that's where most of the artists with magic live. So magic is built into the buildings, the transportation, the communication systems, the entertainment, everything. There are libraries and museums, shows to go see, lots of good food, the people are friendly. Yeah, I’d definitely want to go there. :)
happy sts!! :) How do you come up with WIP ideas, and how do you choose which ones to write? Do you have a favourite?
happy sts!!
My WIPs are a combination of escapism + topics/themes/tropes/aesthetics I love + autobiographical things from my life. So, to use my WIP When I’m With You for example, I combined my love of wlw stories and road trips with my need to escape from my life right now and mixed in some apocalyptic themes and ended up with that WIP!
The WIPs I write sort of... choose me, if that makes sense? The ones I end up with are the ones that have to be written, they have to get out of my head.
I have a tonnnn of projects right now, including with other people (!!!), but I have to say my favorite aesthetics-wise is my Pirates WIP. It’s such a fun jaunt into a genre I don’t normally write in (I’m more comfortable writing contemporary than fantasy), but I’m having a good time!
HAPPY STS!! How do you get in the mood for writing? Do you find that some characters come easier than others? Which ones and why?
Hello! Hi :>>
My mood for writing is usually set by deciding to write these days. I try to make it a routine, so that every day starts with priority “write” until I’ve written. I usually have breakfast first but sometimes I write during breakfast, too, but what I do to write is I find an environment that’s clean and nice and not too hot to stay in, usually my bedroom, and turn on my writing machine. Usually my writing machine is the iPad, because it’s portable; lately I’ve been actually writing at my computer, which is a new development. I’ve had issues focusing and getting into my story at a computer for a lot of years so it’s a surprise that I can now apparently do this, too.
Anyway, I usually play nature sounds in the background according to my scene that I’m writing: I have playlists for day sounds, rainy day sounds, night sounds, dusk sounds, rivers, scenes with horses... An app I’d absolutely recommend for this is Relax Sounds, I usually have it open on my phone while I’m writing so I don’t have to be swapping between apps to navigate it.
Also coffee. Coffee is a crucial moodsetter.
As per characters that come easier, yeah. I always have characters that really come from the heart, that I know better than anything, but surprisingly with my current WIP, I haven’t had issues writing anybody yet. I think Theodor is the easiest to write - he’s very close to my heart, speaks like a true relic from the olden times which matches my writing style, and is perceived by the narrator rather than being the narrator, which leaves much more room for interpretation and unspoken things. He’s extremely fun to write and if I had my way my entire WIP would be nothing but dialogue scenes between him and the PoV character, Eleisanna. Which, of course, would be a great disservice to a character whose defining trait is “never speaks unless necessary”. Sorry, man, I just like hearing your voice.
Overall I’ve been surprised how much easier writing my OCs is compared to writing fanfiction. I mean, it makes sense - I know everything there is to know about these characters and don’t need to fact check them for anything, or try to imitate their voices, because I am their voice. But somehow this never occurred to me before. I always found OCs to be a very intimidating project before.
“If I die, I’m going to haunt you.”
Thanks for this! It just so happens that I’ve got a fanfic in-progress that fits this prompt perfectly~
I’ll call this piece: Something That Probably Happened in HHSH:
Smile 5. “If I die, I’m going to haunt you.”
Yugi could only half-believe what he was hearing.
“You’re…you’re kidding right?” he asked.
Atem gestured to the chair he’d pulled out from the dinner table expectantly. “Why would I be?”
“Because I might fall and break my neck?"
"Nonsense. You will be perfectly safe.”
Canis Major, Orion, Virgo!
THANK YOU FOR THE ASK <3
Canis Major - Do you like writing character-driven stories or plot-driven stories?
Personally, I think a really good story has characters and plot informing each other, but I’d definitely say I focus more on writing a character with clear motivations than a character the fits a plot motivation? IDK LMAO
Orion - Do you listen to music while writing?
ALWAYS. I listen to music when I video chat with people too. I think on my Spotify in 2018 I listened to around 109,000 minutes of music? I have waaaaaaay too many playlists! Which btw, y’all are welcome to ask for my Spotify account! <3
Virgo - Describe your favourite tropes.
Hmm, good question. I really love friends-to-lovers, or enemies-to-lovers. And I adore a good found family. I’m not really well-versed in tropes though haha! (:
let's do POV! :>
Thank you!
okay I’m writing a new story with the same characters, Deanna and Cassie (only have written 3k of it so far but here we go)
POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective
Deanna took the familiar stage, taking off her leather jacket and setting it on the stool before sitting on it herself. Guitar in hand, Deanne put her lips to the mic, looking out to the crowd.
“Hey everyone, I’m Deanna and I’ll be doing a few originals today. And don’t worry, I don’t really care if you actually listen,” She smiled and began to strum at her guitar. It was a quiet afternoon in the coffee shop, her favorite time to perform.
The tune of the guitar radiated off the walls of the shop. Her fingers moved naturally against the string. She closed her eyes and let herself get lost in the song.
“Her hair reminded you of Autumn
And her skin was like honey
She whispered your name like a prayer
But her kiss tasted like a heavenly sin
She stole your sweaters and now
They smell like her perfume,”
Her words that once were only written on paper, were being spoken into the world and she didn’t mind who listened.
This was really short and done quickly so I’m sorry!
happy STS!! Do you prefer high action scenes or slower pace? Do you prefer dialogue or description? Feel free to elaborate why! :)
Thanks for the ask! :D Definitely slower pace. I have a hard time writing anything action-- anything I do tends to be more about the lives of the dorks rather than high stakes. Even when there's a decently large plot going on, it's told from their POVs on a much smaller scale of how they're personally interacting with whatever the plot is. I always hope that I can pull off something that's more character-driven when fantasy tends to be more action and adventure driven. I don't want things to be boring, ya know?
I definitely prefer writing dialogue to description. It always takes me several edits to get description sounding decent, but my dialogue is spot on from the start because it's really easy to get into the heads/voices of the characters. I mean, after 7 years of working on this series, I should hope I have their voices down lol
