O you who have believed, when [the adhān] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allāh and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew

Surah Al Jumu'ah Ayah 9

روى الطبراني في الأوسط وفي الصغير عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت جاء رجل إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: (يا رسول الله والله إنك لأحب إلي من نفسي، وإنك أحب إلي من أهلي، وأحب إلي من ولدي، وأني لأكون في البيت فأذكرك فما أصبر حتى آتيك فأنظر إليك، وإذا ذكرت موتي وموتك عرفت أنك إذا دخلت الجنة رفعت مع النبيين، وأني إذا دخلت الجنة خشيت ألا أراك، فلم يرد عليه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى نزل جبريل عليه السلام بهذه الآية "ومن يطع الله والرسول فأولئك مع الذين أنعم الله عليهم من النبيين والصديقين والشهداء والصالحين وحسن أولئك رفيقاً"

Love how my local grocers close their shop around Jumu’ah time to go pray ṣalāh and it just reminds me of the āyah where Allah swt says:

يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِذَا نُوۡدِىَ لِلصَّلٰوةِ مِنۡ يَّوۡمِ الۡجُمُعَةِ فَاسۡعَوۡا اِلٰى ذِكۡرِ اللّٰهِ وَذَرُوا الۡبَيۡعَ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ خَيۡرٌ لَّـكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

“O believers, when the call for Prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and give up all trading. That is better for you, if you only knew.”

‎[62:9]

‎This particular verse was revealed because when the Adhan was called on Friday, people would become so busy in their worldly trade and business that they wouldn’t go to pray so Allah swt revealed this verse to remind us how important ṣalāh is even over our businesses that earn us a ḥalāl living.

May Allah swt place barakah in their shop and in their earnings. May He bless every shop owner who closes their livelihood for a few minutes to hasten to ṣalāh and may Allah swt bless every individual who leaves their workplace for a short while just to fulfil their duty to Him. Amīn
