Jung Hwan almost wants to laugh at how close to the truth they are. How all of them are hanging onto his every word—the golden son, the one who spent all his days and nights studying and only took breaks to go play football on the wide-open field underneath the summer sun, the one who got into the academy with ease, graduated with ease, the one who was good.

He had tried so hard to be good. But his mother had taught him to be honest.

Four years after that fateful night in the alley that led to Jung Hwan and Taek getting together, Jung Hwan grapples with his insecurities, his life as he grows into an independent young adult, and how he yearns to let his family, the people who matter most to him, see who he is and what he has hidden for much of his life.

During the winter of nineteen eighty-eight, amidst a torturous Secret Santa gift exchange and the end of their youth, Jung Hwan comes to terms with himself and his relationships.

There is no way to put how much he loves Taek - his son, the child he had raised and cared for. Parents love their children almost impossibly from the moment they are put into this world, from when they are formless. Even as Taek had cried in his arms, a tiny little thing, Moo Sung had loved him, without knowing who he was and who he would grow up to be. Being a parent is watching who your child becomes, watching them take form, and loving them still. Moo Sung has tried to guide him with a gentle hand, but let him take his course.

Moo Sung watches his son Taek grow up, find his way, and fall in love. Over that time, they express their love for each other in different ways, ones that may be nonconventional, but still true to who they are. Or: how Taek and his dad show each other their love without speaking it out loud, and the one time they do speak it out loud, featuring the tight-knit community backdrop of Ssangmun-dong.
