The Devil You Know
As a disclaimer: I’ve only ever read a single Ciaphas Cain story, the latest one, Choose Your Enemies, so I’m not really familiar with the series. As this is a long-running and character-focused series I just feel I should put this out there since it would most definitely influence my enjoyment or appreciation of it and thus my opinions on it.
Synopsis: Ciaphas Cain returns! As the tyranids ravage the jungle moon on which he is stationed, the Hero of the Imperium must do the unthinkable and ally with the sinister dark eldar...
So technical details first; the general quality of the voice acting and sound direction in Black Library audio dramas is top notch. Even in bad ones that is the case. However, if there is a problem, it is that at times the ‘gruff male military men’ voices can become rather difficult to distinguish. This is particularly the case because of how often 40k stories have a cast of ONLY gruffy male military men. So, for example, in this one there were times where I honestly failed to tell between Ciaphas and the Catachan Commander who was talking. That being said it’s a minor gripe but it is one I feel I must point out since I haven’t encountered it often.
The story is longer than Killshot but still shorter (by a bit) than most of the contemporary 40k audio dramas at only 57 minutes. That being said the nature of the story, largely diverging in the middle to follow Jurgen’s and Ciaphas’ perspective seperately, feels a little...dragging. To be honest Jurgens’ sections just feel...unneeded? They don’t have anything engaging or interesting happen and so feel a bit tacked on.
The characters themselves, to their credit are mostly interesting. Ciaphas, Amberley and Jurgens all have distinct personalities and more humour to them than most 40k characters which can make them fun. Ciaphas’ humour, basically “I suck but actually I am amazing” does get a little overused to me after the third time Amberley intrudes on his self-deprecation to talk about how he’s actually amazing just because the ‘crouching moron, hidden badass’ isn’t exactly a new trope. Still the characters are predominantly engaging, those three at least the Catachan supporting cast really do nothing, with the sole exception of the antagonist. The Drukhari enemy is just stupid, as in I mean her intelligence now. She honestly just comes across as an idiot. Curiously she has a slavic (Russian?) accent. I guess to play up that stereotype of Russian Femme Fatales that we sadly still have?
The story itself is fine but it’s biggest failing is that I feel it oversold itself. The story claims to mostly be about ‘gasp’ Ciaphas working with a Drukhari? But...their working together amounts to about twenty minutes walking through a jungle together doing nothing and then instantly attacking each other again. There isn’t really any ‘enemy mine’ moments or sensation so it feels like the primary hook of the story falls flat. At the very least the plot is mostly coherent and I have little issue with the conflicts and power discrepencies within it. A good reason is given for why the Catachan don’t die as easily as they would against enormous hordes of Tyranid via Jurgens’ null abilities and both a featured Lictor and the Drukhari enemy are mostly competent as fighters.
The only issue from a power logistics point of view I have is that I really think stories would benefit from making use of Dracons and Hekatarii Bloodbrides more. Ciaphas Cain is a major, special, character within the story so him being able to be an impressive warrior even against Drukhari is fine, it doesn’t concern me if he beats a Wych or even a Hekatarii Bloodbride but...the problem is that Archons and Succubi are restorted to as quickly that it really feels like the prominence of the station is being ridiculously diluted. Ciaphas Cain having a hardwon duel and defeatin a Hekatarii Bloodbride? No problem. A Succubi? A multiple centuries old warrior who lives in a hellish warzone of constant conflict who specifically engages in multiple centuries’ worth of gladitorial combat? I...find that a little to much to accept. To be blunt Succubi should be among the greatest single melee combatants in the entire Galaxy. They have the advantage of lifespan, technology, heightened experience accumulation and consistent conflict over everyone.
But that’s one gripe, mostly the story doesn’t actually delve into making any single group or characters seem unstoppable.
Overall Devil You Know is mildly entertaining but I feel it marketed itself poorly. I listened to it for I hoped for something akin to Denied in Age of Sigmar or Corsair: Face of the Voice, an enjoyable if acrimonious tale of a human and Xenos cooperating through grit teeth. The story really isn’t about that though at all.
I think if you like Ciaphas Cain, if you like the Astra Militarum or the Schola Progenium it’s an okay story, but it isn’t something I can recommend as incredible or gripping or a must-have at all. I certainly would not purchase it again now knowing what it is.
